Electric comparators
Introduction:
A comparator is a precision instrument used to compare the Dimensions of a given
working component with the actual working standard.  There are different types of
comparators are available like electronic, electrical, mechanical, optical, sigma,
digital and pneumatic comparators. But in this presentation, we are going to
discuss the Electrical comparators. Electrical comparators convert the linear
movement of the plunger into electrical signals and these signals further calibrated
with the help of Galvanometer on to the graduated scale.
Electric comparators
Working Principle:
The principle of the electrical comparator is to convert linear displacements into an
electric output. In this comparator, we will use the whetstone bridge circuit and the
working of this comparator can be done by using the step up and step-down
transformer. There are three components required for the electrical comparator
which is like transducer, amplifier and display device as a meter. The working of the
electrical comparator is described below.
Electric comparators
Working Principle:
The armature is placed center in between the coils, the inductance of both coils is
equal and opposite direction with different signs. Hence the bridge stone circuit is
balanced, thus the meter will read zero, but it is not possible practically. In the
practical cases, the armature will be lifted and lowered down through the plunger
when the measurement is done.
Electric comparators
Checking of accuracy:
To check the accuracy of a given specimen or work, first a standard specimen is
placed under the plunger. After this, the resistance of wheat stone bridge is
adjusted so that the scale reading shows zero. Then the specimen is removed. Now,
the work is introduced under the plunger. If height variation of work presents, it
will move the plunger up or down. The corresponding movement of the plunger is
first amplified by the amplifier then it is transmitted to the meter to show the
variations. The least count of this electrical comparator is 0.001mm.
Electric comparators
Advantages of Electric comparators:
• Vibrations are reduced due to least weight of mechanical.
• It consists of less moving parts.
• By AC supply the friction errors are reduced.
• For measuring units, the indicating instrument can be held at remote locations.
Electric comparators
Disadvantages of Electric comparators:
• The accuracy of this Comparator is affected by supplying of variations in AC
current.
• Heating of coils may lead to the occurrence of zero drift.
• It is more expensive.
• Pointer moving over a fixed scale reduces the range of Comparator.
Electric comparators
USE OF ELECTRICAL COMPARATOR:
• It is used for measuring head.
• It is used indication panel, to prove visual indicators.
• It is used for external gauging, internal gauging, and thickness gauging.
• It is used for measuring flatness measurement.
