Median (Md)

Median (Md)
The median is the value of the middle item in an ordered arrangement of data. In an ordered
distribution, half of the terms are located above the median and half are below the median. The
median is a positional measure; hence, the values of the individual items in a distribution do not
affect the median.

B. Grouped Data

How to compute the median for Grouped Data

1. Determine the value which divides the distribution into two (2) equal parts.
2. Thus we consider the “less than” cumulative frequency which is 50% of the total
number of cases or N.

Formula: Md = Ll + N/2 – cf i
fm

Where:
Md. – Median
Ll – Lower limit of the median class (exact lower limit)
cf – cumulative frequency
fm – frequency of the median class
i – interval size

Example:

Median – using the lower limit

Md = Ll + N/2 – cf i
fm

Data:
Class f cf NOTE:
Interval
60-64 2 2 366 x 50% = 183
55-59 12 14 Observe the “less
50-54 20 34 than frequency”
HL
45-49 32 66
40-44 36 102
35-39 58 160 cf
29.5 30-34 64 fm
25-29 58 142 cumulative frequency
20-24 42 84
15-19 23 42 Ll
10-14 15 19
5-9 4 4
€N = 366
Solution:
Md = Ll + N/2 – cf i
fm

= 29.5 + 366/2 – 142 5

64

= 29.5 + 183 – 142 5

64

= 29.5 + 41 5
64

= 29.5 + 205
64

= 29.5 + 3.20

= 32.7

Counterchecking using the Higher Limit (HL)

Md = HL – N/2 – cf 5
fm

= 34.5 – 366/2 – 160 5

64

= 34.5 – 183 – 160 5

64

= 34.5 - 23 5
64

= 34.5 – 115
64

= 34.5 – 1.8

= 32.7

Lesson 4
Weighted Mean (WX)

Weighted Mean (WX) is used when the variable are presented in a Likert’s scaling.

Example:

Problem: To what extent do teachers encounter the following problems?

Given:
5 4 3 2 1
Verbal
Problems VS S MS SS NS WX
Description
f f f f f
1. Truancy 71 45 44 54 31 3.29 MS
2. Absenteeism 117 52 44 27 5 4.02 S
3. Malnutrition 112 79 49 5 0 4.22 VS
4. Non - readers 130 58 50 6 1 4.27 VS
5. Non - numerates 133 49 46 14 3 4.20 S
Scale: (NOTE: This is standard scaling)
Legend: 4.21 – 5.00
VS – Very Serious 3.41 – 4.20
S – Serious 2.61 – 4.20
MS – Moderately Serious 1.81 – 2.60
SS – Slightly Serious 1.00 – 1.80
NS – Not Serious at all

Solution:
Problem 1 on Truancy N = 245

(71 x 5) + (45 x 4) + (44 x 3) + (54 x 2) + (31 x 1)

355 + 180 + 132 + 108 + 31 = 806

806 = 3.29 Formula: WX = €fW

245 N

Problem 2 on Absenteeism

(117 x 5) + (52 x 4) + (44 x 3) + (27 x 2) + (5 x 1)

585 + 206 + 132 + 54 + 5 = 984

984 = 4.02
245

(Do the same as with Problems 3, 4, and 5)

Activity 7

4. ECARP 36 45 70 72 27
5. GPAK 24 59 63 68 36

G = Good - 2.61 – 3.40
F = Fair - 1.81 – 2.60
P = Poor - 1.00 – 1.80

Formula : WX = €fw
N

Where:
WX = weighted mean
f = frequency
w = weight
N = no. of cases
€ = summation sign

NOTE: Use the standard scale to interpret result for the verbal description.
