SLEEP APNEA

Name – bharvi yadav

Roll no. – 200BSCCP015
WHAT IT IS?
◦ Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person's
breathing is interrupted during sleep. People with untreated sleep
apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes
hundreds of times. This means the brain -- and the rest of the body
-- may not get enough oxygen.
TYPES
• Obstructive sleep apnea, the more common form that occurs when
throat muscles relax
• Central sleep apnea, which occurs when your brain doesn't send
proper signals to the muscles that control breathing
• Complex sleep apnea syndrome, also known as treatment-emergent
central sleep apnea, which occurs when someone has both obstructive
sleep apnea and central sleep apnea
SYMPTOMS
• Loud snoring
• Gasping for air during sleep
• Awakening with a dry mouth
• Morning headache
• Difficulty staying asleep (insomnia)
• Excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia)
• Difficulty paying attention while awake
• Irritability
RISK FACTORS
• High blood pressure
• Stroke
• Heart failure, irregular heart beats, and heart attacks
• Diabetes
• Depression
• Worsening of ADHD
• Headaches
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTS
◦  Sleep apnea test called a polysomnogram (PSG)
◦ Electroencephalogram
◦ Electromyogram
◦ Electrooculogram
◦ Electrocardiogram
◦ Nasal airflow sensor
◦ Snore microphone
TREATMENT AT HOME
◦ Lose weight
◦ Not use alcohol and sleeping pills
◦ Change sleeping position
◦ Stop smoking
◦ Treat allergies
OTHER TREATMENT METHODS
◦ Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
With continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), you wear a mask over your nose and/or mouth while you
sleep. The mask is hooked up to a machine that delivers a constant flow of air into your nose. This airflow helps
keep your airways open so you can breathe the way you should.
◦ Oral Appliances for Sleep Apnea
◦ Surgery for Sleep Apnea
◦ Upper airway stimulation (UAS)
◦ Medications
