Immunizations
Patient Education
What is
immunization?

Immunization, or immunisation, is the process by which an

individual's immune system becomes fortified against an
infectious agent. When you get sick, your body produces
antibodies to help you fight the disease and recover. These
antibodies remain in your body after the disease has passed,
protecting you from contracting the same ailment in the future.
Immunity is the term for this. You don't have to get sick to gain
immunity, though. Immunization is a method of gaining
disease immunity.

- Immunization (or vaccination) protects people from
disease by introducing a vaccine into the body that
triggers an immune response, just as though you had
been exposed to a disease naturally. The vaccine
contains the same antigens or parts of antigens that
cause the disease, but the antigens in vaccines are
either killed or greatly weakened.
