Describe the basic concepts

01 related to environment and 02 Explain the factors that contribute
to environmental issues and
disaster risk reduction concerns.
management.

03 Formulate an intervention action plan that

may contribute to environmental protection
program.
Environmental
Pollution
SANTIAGO, RHENALYN
Presenter
Environmental Pollution
1. Muralikrishna and Manickam (2017) define environmental pollution as
“the contamination of the physical and biological components of the earth
or atmosphere system to such an extent that normal environmental
processes are adversely affected.”

2. Environmental pollution is largely attributed to human’s action, especially

when the urban-industrial and technological era began.

3. The exploitation of natural resources and excessive use of natural energy

due to industry needs resulted in the alteration of the original chemical and
physical components of land, air, and water. It poses health, social,
economic, and aesthetic problems.

SOLID AND
LIQUID WASTE
SIDAYON, PRINCE KYLER
Presenter
SOLID
Solid-waste management, the collecting, treating,
and disposing of solid material that is
discarded because it has served its purpose or is no
longer useful.
LIQUID
Liquid waste can be defined as such
as wastewater, fats, oils or grease (FOG),
used oil, liquids, solids, gases, or sludges and
hazardous household liquids. These liquids
that are hazardous or potentially harmful to
human health or the environment.

WASTE
MANAGEMEN
T
Bea Johnson revealed the 5Rs of zero waste management in her book
Zero Waste Home. Ms. Johnson and her family pioneered zero waste habits at home in 2008, which
has since grown into a global movement. She offered the following method for zero waste
management at home, which any family may simply follow.

5Rs of Zero Waste Home Management

REFUSE ROT THE REST

Refuse what you don’t need. Say ‘NO” to Composting process of remaining organic waste
disposables, like bags, straws, cutlery, cups, as wells in the house like food stuff, peelings of fruits
as to junk mail, promotional freebies and other and vegetables as well as other disposable
short-lived non-necessities materials. biodegradable materials like papers.

REDUCE
means letting go of household RECYCLE
materials which are no longer of use is a series of steps that takes a used
by donating or selling them. material and processes,
remanufactures, and sell it
as a new product.
REUSE
It simply means redesigning or converting disposable
items for reusable and permanent alternatives.
CLIMATE
CHANGE
TAN, HAZEL
Presenter
Climate change is caused by the increasing
volume of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) in the
earth's atmosphere. These are gases that absorb
infrared radiation, warming the earths’ surface
and contributing to climate change.
Global warming is associated
with the increased concentration of
greenhouse gases in
the atmosphere.
CAUSED OF CLIMATE CHANGE

BEFORE
(naturally caused)

Many greenhouse gases

occur naturally like
methane, carbon dioxide,
nitrous oxide, ozone, and
even water vapour.
CAUSED OF CLIMATE CHANGE

AFTER
(man-made)
human activities also add to the
increase of naturally occurring
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Greenhouse gases like
hydroclourocarbons, perfluorocarbon,
and sulphur hexafluoride which absorb
and hold greater heat are man-made.
These are produced through industrial
processes.

MARTIN PROWSE BIRTE SNILSTVEIT

RESEARCHER AUTHOR, EDITOR AND
RESEARCHER
Prowse and Snilstveit (2010)

ACCORDING TO THEM…
“climate change mitigation refers to
policies that reduce greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions and preserve carbon
sinks”
Prowse and Snilstveit (2010)

ACCORDING TO THEM…
“human activities greatly contributed to GHG emissions, hence
interventions to mitigate climate change are being implemented
across a range of sectors and industries, such as energy,
transport, industrial production, waste management, and
agriculture and forestry.”
Prowse and Snilstveit (2010)

Meanwhile…
“Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change defines
an adjustment in natural or human systems in
response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or
their effects, which moderates harm or exploits
beneficial opportunities.”
