Stress

Stress is a common feeling we get when

we feel under pressure.

In living organisms this may result in risks

to survival or restrictions in growth or
reproduction.
EXAMPLE OF STRESS IN
ECOSYSTEM
Stressors

Stressors are environmental

factors that affect organisms and
ecosystems.

To some degree, stressors affect all

organisms as well as their
populations, communities, and
ecoscapes (landscapes and
seascapes).
Environmental Stressors

Environmental stressors
may occur as an intense,
short-lived event of
destruction, also known as
a disturbance.
Environmental stressors are
factors whose influence is to
constrain productivity,
reproductive success, and
ecosystem development.

NATURAL STRESSORS

Natural stressors are associated with such environmental

influences as: competition, predation, disease, and other
interactions among organisms;onstraints related to
climate or to inadequate or excessive nutrients, moisture,
or space;disturbances such as wildfire and windstorms.

ANTHROPOGENIC STRESSORS

Anthropogenic stressors are associated with human

activities.
It causing important damage to resources that are needed
to sustain people and their economy, and also to natural
biodiversity and ecosystems.
TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
STRESSORS

1)NATURAL DISASTERS

Natural disasters are

natural event such as a
flood, earthquake, or
hurricane that causes
great damage or loss of
life.
TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
STRESSORS

2)HABITAT DISTRACTION
Habitat destruction can occur
from natural phenomena such
as earthquakes, forest fires, or
volcanic eruptions. However,
the greatest loss of habitat
today is caused by human
activities of transformation,
degradation, and fragmentation
of ecosystems.
TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
STRESSORS

3)POLLUTION
Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the
environment.
Soil pollution refers to the
contamination of soil with
anomalous concentrations of
toxic substances.

Air pollution is contamination of

contamination of water bodies, environment by any chemical,
usually as a result of human physical or biological agent that
activities, so that it negatively modifies the natural

atmosphere.
TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
STRESSORS

4)COMPETITION
Competition is most typically
considered the interaction of
individuals that compete for a
common resource that is in limited
supply.
In the short run, competition should
cause a reduction in the number of
species living within an area,
preventing very similar species from
co-occurring.
TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
STRESSORS
5)TOXIC CHEMICAL
EXPOSURE
Toxic substance is a substance
that can be poisonous or cause
health effects.
It affect an organism and its
community by reducing its
species diversity and abundance.
Such changes in population
dynamics affect the ecosystem by
reducing its productivity and

6)CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is generally

defined as a significant variation of
average weather conditions—say,
conditions becoming warmer,
wetter, or drier—over several
decades or more.
TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
STRESSORS

7)INVASIVE SPECIES
Invasive species are capable of
causing extinctions of native plants
and animals, reducing biodiversity,
competing with native organisms
for limited resources, and altering
habitats. This can result in huge
economic impacts and fundamental
disruptions of coastal and Great
Lakes ecosystems.
TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
STRESSORS

8)RESOURCE DEPLETION

Resource Depletion occurs

when the renewable and non-
renewable natural resources
become scarce because they
are consumed faster than they
can recover.
TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
STRESSORS

9)DEFORESTATION

Deforestation is when humans

remove or thin forests for lumber
or to use the land where the trees
stood for crops, grazing,
extraction (mining, oil, or gas), or
development as the population
increases and people migrate.
TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
STRESSORS

10)LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY

Loss of biodiversity
undermines the ability of
ecosystems to function
effectively and efficiently
and thus undermines
nature's ability to support
a healthy environment.
What could be
