Genre
• A genre is a thematic category for films or motion
pictures based on similarities either in the narrative
elements, or the emotional response to the film.

Documentary as a Genre :
* Documentary Film is a non-fiction motion picture
intended to document reality primarily for the purposes
of instruction, education, or maintaining a historical
record. This film is an Observational Documentary .
Objective
* The main objective of this Documentary is to draw
attention to the Child Labour prevelant in mining of Mica in
the state of Jharkhand , heavily rich in Natural Resources .
This Documentary also throws light on the hardships in the
lives of miners .

This documentary shows , how the illegal mining of Mica

is slowly being turned up into base of Child Labour due to
the lack of Infrastructure and Facilities in the state . Due to
lack of opportunities , the Miners of Jharkhand are
completely dependent on the Extraction of Minerals like
Mica , which is mostly sold at a very cheap price due to the
presence of Middle mans . However , the makeup products
made by the same Mica are extremely Expensive .
Due to this huge price gap , People (miners) take the help of
their children , who are even as young as 4 to 5 years Old ,
leading them into a very hazardous job of Mining . In the Past
few Years , Deaths of many children has been reported .
Through this Documentary Film , A voice is raised against the
practice of Child Labour .

Summary

In the starting of video , we see how the Mica was

discovered by britishers . Then , we see how the people of a
certain area are completely dependent on extraction of Mica
for their livelihoods . While in the illegal mine , we see how
even children below 18 are extracting Mica from deep
tunnels , dug for extraction . Most of the people working
there had injuries , due to the razor sharp element . They
also inhale Mica dust , causing respiratory issues . Working
of Children can be Fatal here.
* Then , we meet Chetan Sharma , who is one of the youngest
Successful Mica Exporter from Jharkhand with an export
Experience of 3 years . In the Exporting factory , no child
labour is seen , depicting that one of the reasons of child
Labour is due to mines being illegal . As per data about 90 %
of the Mica mines of Jharkhand are illegal . Even though ,
Mica Exporting Factories are legal , Nobody actually cares ,
how this Mica is being extracted or from where it is coming .

* We also see that , Vishnu and Vishal , who have been

working in the mines , want to become an army officer and a
Civil Engineer . Also , Pooja , who is in age of being married ,
doesn’t want her children to work in Mica mines .
Later on , we come to see , how children are being taught
and How they know the value of Education in their lives .
But still , an important resource Mica is sold at Rs. 5/kg
where as the products like cosmetics , made from Mica are
sold at a very high price . Mica is also used for making
Processors and is responsible for glimmer in Expensive cars.

Documentary Analysis
In this documentary , we see how child labour is being
practiced in the under priviledged parts of Jharkhand due
to lack of Facilities . We also see the lack of Infrastructure ,
how despite the dangerous way of extraction , the miners
are forced to sell Mica at a low rate of Rs.5 / kg which is
later on , used to make expensive products . This movie
also throws light on the lives and problems of the miners .
Similarity to Text : The Lost Spring

* There are a lot of similarities in the conditions of these

people .People working in the mines are heavily dependent on
the Mica just like how people at Seemapuri are dependent on
the Rag picking. Also light is thrown on child labours in both
texts. Children also get excited after they find a rupee or ten in
the trash similar to how miners rely on luck for their daily
income. Also these occupations are ther only way to survive
for them. We see , how Saheb’s living conditions are very
similar to workers in Mica mines.

* We see that , in both the cases the business man usually

make huge profits , but don’t share it with the workers . These
workers , who don’t know anything other than bangle making
and mining , have to do like 8 to 9 hours of daily labour just to
earn a few hundreds , and that even at the cost of their lives
and eyes . At the end , we can see that , in both the cases ,
underpiviledged are being exploited .
Conclusion
States like Jharkhand , are very rich in natural resources . But
still , due to the presence of illegal mines ,we see how it is
slowly becoming a spot for Child Labour . Children have to
work here just to get bread . Their main motto is survival ,
which they get , but at cost of their Future .In future , all of
these problems can be solved , if the Govt . looks into these
matters .

Recommendations
 Illegal mining of Mica should be checked .
 Children should be sent to school instead of mines.
 Proper and fixed price for extracted Mica should be
provided.
 Govt. should invest in the form of human capital.
 Factories should be setup in impoverished areas.
