MEMORY

STORAGE
DEVICE
Computer Memory is an internal
storage area in the computer used to
either temporarily or permanently store
data or instructions to be processed.
Types of Computer Storage Devices
1. RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY (RAM)
This is the primary and temporary storage of data and programs that
are being accessed by the Central Processing Unit (CPU). Width RAM,
it is possible to randomly select and use any location of the memory
directly for storing and retrieving data.
2. HARD DRIVE
This is the form of computer memory that allows
permanent storage of data. It spins, reads and writes one or
more disk platters. The hard drive is the storage medium in
desktop and laptop computers as well as servers and
mainframes through the world.
3. VIRTUAL MEMORY
Acts an alternative RAM. It is a memory that is used to
load one or more RAM chips with several memory
modules on each with virtual memory. All the physical
memory is controlled by the operating system so that
there whenever the program needs memory.
4. CACHE MEMORY
This holds the most frequently used data or instructions
to be processed. Cache is the high speed buffer between
the CPU and the main memory, and often consulted by
the CPU when instructions cannot be found.
Types of Memory Modules
1. SINGLE IN-LINE MODULE (SIMM)
A SIMM consist of memory chips soldered onto a modular
printed circuit board or PCB, which inserts into a socket on
the motherboard. It is module of one or several RAM chips
in small circuit board with pins that connect to computer.
2. DUAL IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE (DIMM)
DIMM holds memory chips. Like SIMMs, most
DIMMs are installed vertically into expansion sockets.
However, the main difference between the two is that,
with SIMM, pins on opposite sides of the board are “tied
together” to form one electrical contact with DIMM.
3. SMALL OUTLINE DIM (SO DIMM)
This type of memory commonly used in notebook
computers. SO DIMM is significantly smaller than
the standard DIMM because it is intended for
notebook computer.
4. RAMBUS INLINE MEMORY MODULE RIMM
This is trademarked name for direct Rambus
memory module. It takes less space inside the
computer that DIMM module and has different pin
characteristics. RIMMs transfer data in 16-bit
chunks.
STORAGE DEVICE
Is any type of hardware that stores data. It reads and writes
information on magnetic or optical storage media. It can be
used to store permanently or to retrieve information from a
media disk.
