VERBAL
SIGNALS
The verbal signals used by a
speaker are articulation,
pronunciation, volume, rate,
pause, pitch, and vocal variety.

Articulation - refers to the way a sound is
formed and delivered.

01 - These sounds are formed through articulators.


- difficult for you to listen and understand the message
if the sound of a word is not properly articulated.

Pronunciation - refers to how a word
is said and is stressed by the speaker.

Volume - is the loudness or softness which
the speaker speaks.

Rate- Rate is the speed with which a speaker
speaks; pauses for emphasis or effect.

ultimately decrease the amount of information you retain
from the speech.

to grasp complex information and follow the

Pause - can be used to emphasize a point, collect
thoughts, or transition to a new idea.

Pitch - Pitch is the highness or lowness of the
speaker's voice.

entirely on message because you will get distracted
by the irritating sound of his/her voice.

Vocal Variety - is the way the speaker varies his/her vocal
qualities (volume, rate, pauses, and pitch) in the duration of his/her
speech.

- Eye Contact is a way for the speaker to tell
the audience that the speaker is credible and
that the speaker cares about how the audience

- Facial Expression helps the audience determine if
what the speaker is saying is consistent with how the
speaker is saying it.
- it is important not to disregard any facial expression
as a message could be found from it.

Body Gestures
- Body Gestures also communicate to the audience
how the speaker feels about the message.

3 - Gestures are the use of the body in some way to


reinforce an idea.

The following examples are just a few common gestures
and their possible meanings:
