Identify the functions of integumentary system.

Explain how the organs of the integumentary system

function and work together.
1. It safeguards the body against harmful microorganisms.

2. It protects the internal organs.

3. It disposes waste materials from the body.

4. It regulates body temperature.

5. It prevents body dehydration.

6. It serves as a sense organ for touch, pain, pressure,

temperature.

7. It stores water and fat.

8. It manufactures Vitamin D for bone growth.

THREE LAYERS OF THE SKIN
EPIDERMIS

- It is the outermost and the

thinnest layer of the skin.
- It contains epithelial cells
that has protein called keratin
for protection.
- Its inner layer of epidermal
cells continuously divide to
replace the cells that die or are
lost.
EPIDERMIS

- It contains melanin which

gives color to the skin. The
melanin came from the cells
called melanocytes.
- Melanin provides protection
of inner cells from damaging
effects of UV rays.
DERMIS

- It is the second / middle

layer of the skin and its thicker
than the epidermis.

- It contains blood vessels,

sebaceous glands, sweat
glands, hair follicles, muscles.
PARTS OF THE DERMIS

SEBACEOUS GLANDS
- It releases sebum (oil) that
moisturizes the skin protecting the
skin against dehydration.
SWEAT GLANDS
- It helps the body dispose of
wastes and regulates body
temperature.
ARRECTOR PILI MUSCLE
- A muscle that is attached to the
hair follicle that contracts when
you feel cold or frightened.
HYPODERMIS

- It is also called as
subcutaneous layer.

- It is filled with fat tissues

and function as a heat
insulator and conserves
body heat.
HAIR

- It covers the entire

skin.
- It has hair follicle and
divided into two: hair
root and hair shaft.
HAIR
HAIR FOLLICLE
- It is made up of epidermal
cells and gets nourishment
from the dermis through the
hair root.
HAIR ROOT (BULB)
- It is found in the dermis
where it get nutrients.
HAIR SHAFT
- It is composed of dead cells
and keratinized cells and far
from source of nourishment.
NAIL

- It protects the ends of the toes

and fingers.
- It is composed of cells that
are grown at the base of the
moon-shaped region called
lunula.
- It is composed of keratin and
dead cells.
