How was the Black Lives Matter born?

The movement started in 2013,after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the

coordinator of a white neighborhood
watch who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old black
teenager.

It was started by three African-American women involved in community

movements: Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi. Alicia Garza
wrote a Facebook post titled "A Love Note to Black People" which featured:
"Our Lives Matter, Black Lives Matter".
Patrisse Cullors replied: #BlackLivesMatter. The movement was born.
How did he go from networks to the streets?
At first, it was just a hashtag that allowed people to express their outrage on social
media, mostly Facebook and Twitter.
But in 2014,the movement gained momentum after the deaths of Michael Brown,an
unarmed 18-year-old black teenager shot dead by police in Ferguson, Missouri, and
Eric Garner, a 44-year-old black also unarmed and died as a result of his heavy-
handed arrest by the New York police.
On this occasion, Black Live Matter begins to organize demonstrations
to denounce the violence and racism of the police.
The first takes place in August 2014 in Ferguson.

They have since appeared to denounce numerous other cases

of police violence against blacks, including the case of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who
was shot dead by police while playing with a dummy weapon in a park. And also for
the recent story of George Floyd, a black man, dies following his arrest by several
police officers.
The movement also denounced violence against black women.
More than 1000 actions have already been organized.
How does it work?

The movement makes extensive use of social networks to mobilize. Hundreds of

thousands of activists follow the movement's Twitter accounts or Facebook pages.
Activists organize protests or what they call dies-in, during which activists lie on
the ground.
They have repeatedly blocked roads, trains or subways.
They also occupied shopping centers, especially on Black Friday, the big day of
sales in the United States.
BLM advocates no-violent action.
Is it a racist movement?

People have attempted to divert the movement's slogan into "All Lives
Matter" by accusing the movement of only caring about the lives of African
Americans.
But “Black Lives Matter” has been defended by many personalities like
Barack Obama and Mark Zuckerberg, who felt that the slogan was justified
because blacks suffered particular persecution and therefore required special
protection.
