ELECTROMAGNETISM

 What is Electromagnetism?
 Why do we care so much about it?
 What major developments took place to give us
our current understanding of Electromagnetic
Theory?

Figure 1: Time Line of Major Developments in EM Theory

ELECTRIC CHARGE

 What is Electric Charge?

 What do we mean by positive and negative charge?
 Uses of Electrical forces between charged bodies
 Net Electric Charge of an Object is denoted by q
 Unit of Charge is COULOMBS (C), where 1 C= 6×10^18 electrons
 Electric Charge only exists in quantities that are integer multiples of an elementary
quantity of charge e
q=ne where n= 0,±1, ± 2, ± 3,… and e= 1.602 ×10^-19
CONDUCTORS AND INSULATORS

 What are conductors?

 What are insulators?
 Class Activity: Name 3 Conductors and Insulators inside the classroom
 Conduction Electrons
 The separation of positive and negative charge in an isolated object under the influence of
a nearby charged object is known as Polarization
 Concept of Charging by Contact
 Concept of Charging by Induction
COULOMBS LAW


The Electrical Force exerted by one charged body on another depends directly on the
product of the magnitudes of the two charges and inversely on the square of their
separation

where F is the magnitude of the mutual force that acts on each of the two charges
With constant of proportionality K, the equation becomes
where K= and =8.85418781762 × 10^-12
