BONDING SHEAR

BEARING STRESS
GROUP 5
BONDING SHEAR
•Shear bond strength test is a simple evaluation procedure used to test the adhesion of
dental adhesives Barkmeier and Cooley (1992). In vitro bond strength tests are useful
and essential for predicting the performance of adhesive systems and possible
correlation with clinical issues. So shear bond strength testing is done with a universal
testing machine, Instron, which is conventionally popular for evaluating the adhesive
ability of adhesive/restorative materials.
BEARING STRESS

• Bearing stress is a contact pressure between separate bodies.

It differs from compressive stress because compressive stress is
the internal stress caused by a compressive force.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NORMAL,
SHEAR AND BEARING STRESSES
Normal Stress – Stress normal to the surface

Shearing Stress- Stress tangent to the surface

Bearing Stress – Compressive force divided by the characteristics area perpendicular to it.
• Sample problem
- assume that a 20-mm diameter rivet joins the plates that are each 110 mm wide, the
allowable stresses are 120 Mpa for bearing in the plate material and 60 MPa for shearing of rivet.
Determine (a) the minimum thickness of each plate; and (b) the largest average tensile stress in
the plates.
