INDIA: THE CURRENT TELECOM STATUS
 India has the second largest telecom network in the world.
 Total subscribers base in the country stood at 1177.02 million
as on January 2020.
 India’s active internet subscription reached 530 million in
2018 at a run rate of 65 million users per year in the last two
years.
 According to a report, 81% Indians use 4G phones, followed
by 3G and 2G at 6%.
 Over the period 2023-2040, it is estimated that 5G
technologies will make an overall contribution of
approximately $450 billion to the Indian economy(0.6% of
GDP by 2040).
GROWTH RATE
 The market is expected to show remarkable growth in
the coming years.
 In 2004 the subscribers numbered 47.38 million.
 The number has increased to 341.31 million by the
end of 2008.
 The number of subscribers increased as 868.47
million reaching at 69.35% penetration by 2013.
 The estimated compound annual growth rate (CAGR)
mobile subscribers from 2008 to 2013 is 20.54%.
THE MOBILE GROWTH: 5G IN ASIA PACIFIC
 With the adoption of 5G, the Asia- Pacific is
estimated to become one of the most advanced
markets of the technology in the whole world.

 Countries like Australia, South Korea and Japan are


aiming to become 5G global leaders.

RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC
Airtel
 Activated intra-circle roaming (ICR), to ensure that operators
could provide seamless connectivity while India went under
lockdown.
 It added the facility of free digital self-assessment test for
Covid-19 symptoms on the Airtel Thanks app.
 It also offered over 10,000 movies and shows plus LIVE TV
for customers.

JIO
 Jioalso came up with several measures for administering seamless
connectivity to its subscribers during the lockdown.
 Through its basic JioFiber broadband offer, the company offered to
provide 10Mbit/s connectivity without any service charges. In a press
release at the end of March, Jio said it would provide double the data
across all plans for JioFiber subscribers to help them work from home.
 Jio doubled the data for all JioFiber users.
 It added the facility of checking for Covid-19 symptoms on its app.

Vodafone/Idea
 Vodafone/Idea also launched special packs for its prepaid
users
 Vodafone made a five-point plan which included maintaining
the quality of service of networks, providing network capacity
and services for critical government functions.
 Improving dissemination of information to the public,
facilitating working from home and helping the small and
micro businesses within their Supply Chain and improving
governments’ insights into people’s movements in affected
areas.

Government owned MTNL and BSNL.
 The year 2007 had been declared as “Year of
Broadband” in India.

RELIANCE JIO
 It was founded in 2004 and it situated in Mumbai,
India.
 Reliance Jio’s official name is ‘Reliance Jio
Infocomm Limited (RJIL) is an provider of
mobile telephony, broadband services and digital
services in India.
 Jio will provide 4G services on a PAN India level
using ‘LTE’ Technology.
VODAFONE IDEA (VI)
 On 20th march 2017, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular
agreed to merge and create a biggest telecom industry
in India with a customer base of over 394 millions.
 Vodafone India own 45.1% entity after transfering 4.9
to the promoters of Idea cellular for Rs.3874 crores in
cash post the merger.
 The promoters of Idea group will hold 26% and rest
of shares will be owned by public so we can say that
it is an 50-50 partnership.
