Learning Outcomes
✗ Explain how globalization affects religious practices
and beliefs.
7
religion
✗ It is a collection of cultural systems, belief systems, and
world views that establishes symbols that relate humanity
to spirituality and to moral values.
8
the most known religions across
the world:
✗ Christianity
The Christian faith centers on beliefs regarding the birth, life, death
and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
✗ Islam
Their God is Allah.
Islam came from the root Arabic letters s-l-m which are the same
root letters the word peace (salam) comes from. The term Islam
itself does not mean peace, but it implies that one finds peace
(salam) through submission (islam).
9
✗ Hinduism
Hinduism has many Gods and embraces many religious ides.
Hinduism is unique in that it’s not a single religion but a
compilation of many traditions and philosophies.
✗ Buddhism
Buddhism worships Buddha.
Buddhists believe that human life is a cycle of suffering and rebirth,
but that if one achieves a state of enlightenment (nirvana), it is
possible to escape this cycle forever.

Globalization
✗ Used to describe the growing interdependence of the world’s
economies, cultures, and populations, brought about by cross-
border trade in goods and services, technology, and flows of
investment, people, and information.
✗ The term sometimes also refers to the movement of people
(labor) and knowledge (technology) across international
borders. There are also broader cultural, political, and
environmental dimensions of globalization.

How
globalization
affects
religious
practices and
Globalization affects religious beliefs and practices by diminishing
the barriers between different cultures, globalization lands religion in
a quagmire of conflicts which reinforce social identities as some do
not accept the new realities and turn to religion to rediscover their
own identity.
14
Globalization transforms the generic 'religion' into
a world-system of competing and conflicting
religions. This process of institutional
specialization has transformed local, diverse and
fragmented cultural practices into recognizable
systems of religion.
15
Religion epitomizes the definition of globalization due to the fact
that it can be spread more efficiency than ever before through the
use of different technological tools.
16
Relationship
between religion
and global
conflict and
conversely, global
peace
Governments and international organizations are
increasingly willing to examine religion and incorporate it, to
some degree, when addressing emerging challenges
across a number of domestic and international policy areas.
18
This form of religious peacemaking garners less public
attention but is growing in importance. Religious communities
also directly oppose repression and promote peace and
reconciliation.
19
Globalization and religion are a relationship that goes hand in hand,
this kind of relationship has many positives and challenges. Religion
starts with a culture of people and expands as the people migrate
globally as a result idea are passed on and traded.
Religions then tend to share common ideas and these ideas in the
modern age are passed on through technology nationwide. The
biggest challenges with religion that is globalized is when it
incorporates terrorist groups and makes their ideas spread faster
globally making the threat widespread.
