ABSTRACT

 The marcet boiler is used to determine the relationship

between temperature and pressure of saturated steam at
equilibrium.
 It is also used to demonstrate the vapour pressure curve.
 The relationship between pressure and temperature is
directly proportional.
 The value (dT/dP) measured from a marcet boiler’s
operation is compared with data in the steam table.
INTRODUCTION
 Thermodynamics deals with the interchange of energy such
as heat and work between system and the surroundings
 The loss or gain of energy in a system has direct impact on its
thermodynamic properties(temperature and pressure).
 Marcet Boiler is used to heat the fluid and measure the
temperature and pressure of water vapor inside its vessel.
 Deductions about the change in thermodynamic properties of
the fluid undergoing different processes can be drawn.
BRIEF HISTORY

 Marcet built this device around 1826.

 Francois Arago had done the same
experiment previously.
 Marcet boiler was also made by Nathan
Chamberlain, Boston, USA, in the year1850.
 He made this boiler for measuring the vapor
pressure of saturated liquid.
BACKGROUND THEORY
When energy increases within the fluid(water), there
is an increase in the number of molecule escape from
the surface until an equilibrium state is reached.
The state of equilibrium depends on the pressure
between the water surface and steam.
The temperature where equilibrium occurs at a given
pressure level is called saturated temperature.
The Marcet Boiler is used to investigate the
relationship between the pressure and temperature of
saturated steam in equilibrium with the fluid(water).
EQUIPMENT AND COMPONENTS

 Safety valve.
 Boiler with insulating jacket
 Bourdon tube pressure gauge
 Drain valve
 Heater
 Overflow
 Thermometer
The Pressure Gauge
OPERATION OF MARCET BOILER

 The marcet boiler is supplied heat.

 The valve of the marcet boiler is opened.
 Air inside the market boiler is allowed to escape
through the valve.
 The valve is closed and heating continues until a
particular pressure.
 Temperature readings at different pressure readings
are then recorded when heated and cooled.
APPLICATIONS OF MARCET BOILER

 Water boiler.

 Generate steam for process application.

 Cooking utilities/Food steamer.

 In academia( Laboratory work).

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

 It is necessary to remove air from the boiler as this could

affect the accuracy of results.
 Sources of errors are measurements, room temperature
and pressure, the stability of materials and calculations.
 As the steam is not allowed to exit, it will cause an
increase in pressure and thus causing the temperature to
increase.
