YES/NO QUESTIONS

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Yes-No questions are the simplest type of


questions. They can simply be answered by “yes”
or “no”.
Example:
• Dian : Are you a student?
Ryan : Yes, I am.
• Trian : Is lala coming today?
Maya : Yes, she is.

 Example I
• Statement : Chandra is a student.
Question : Is Chandra a student?
• Statement : Vaya is in her room.
Question : Is Vaya in her room?
 Example II
• Present tense : she lives in pati.
◦ Does she live in pati?
• Past tense :Dodi played football yesterday.
◦ Did dodi play football yesterday?

INFORMATIVE QUESTION
Informative Question are used to ask about
Qualities, people, time, etc. they consist of
WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY,
WHICH, and HOW, that are usually called WH-
Questions. Most WH-Questions begin with:
Question word + Auxiliary+ Subject + Verb

WHO

“Who” is used in questions as the subject of the verb,


usually the people.
Examples:
• Who is the man in the car?
• Who are you going to visit?

WHAT
“What” is used in questions to ask about things or
activities.
Examples :
• What are you doing?
• What are you reading?
• What does she do on the weekend?
• What is that?

“what kind of/ what type of “ is used to ask about specific things or characteristics.
examples:
- what kind of food do you like?
- what type of car do you drive?

“what time” is used to ask for a specific time.
Examples:
- what time is it?

“what…like” is used to ask about characteristics of something or somebody.
Examples:
- what was the weather like?
- what is Lola like?

WHERE

“Where” is used in questions to ask about places.


Examples:

⇨ Where did you go on your holiday?

“When” is used for asking about a general or specific time.


Examples:
⇨ When did you come?
⇨ When does the train leave?

“Why” is used for asking about reasons.


Examples:
⇨ Why are you late?
⇨ Why are they leaving?

WHICH

“Which” is used to ask about things, especially choices


with a small number of possible answers.
Examples:
⇨ Which book do you like?
⇨ Which CD album did you buy?

“How” is used to ask in what way
Examples:
⇨ How will she get there?
⇨ How do you solve the problem?
“How” is combined with many words to ask questions about specific
characteristics, qualities, quantities, etc.
Examples:
⇨ How much does the skirt cost?
⇨ How often do you go to the library?
⇨ How long do you stay here?
