CONTRACEPTIVE
A device or drugs serving to prevent pregnancy.

CONTRACEPTION:
Defined as the intentional prevention of conception
through the use of various devices, sexual practices,
chemicals, drugs or surgical procedures. Thus, any
devices from becoming pregnant can be considered as a
contraceptive.

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING
-Natural family planning is a method that teaches you at what time during the month you
can have sex without contraception and with a reduced risk of pregnancy. The method is
sometimes called fertility awareness.
How it works:
It works by plotting the times of the month when you’re fertile and when you’re not. You
learn how to record fertility signals, such as your body temperature and cervical
secretions (fluids or mucus), to identify when it’s safer to have sex. Natural family
planning is more effective when more than one fertility signal is monitored.

DIAPHRAGM OR CAP
IVE
-Is a circular dome made of thin, soft silicone that’s inserted into the vagina before
sex.
How the contraceptive diaphragm or cap works?
This is a barrier method of contraception. It covers the cervix so the sperm cannot
get into the womb (uterus) to fertilize an egg.

COMBINED PILLS
IVE
-It contains artificial version of female hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which are produced naturally
in the ovaries.
How it prevents pregnancy?
The pill prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg each month( ovulation). It also:
• Thickens the mucus in the neck of the womb, so it is harder for the sperm to penetrate the womb and
reach the egg.
• Thins the lining of the womb, so there is less chance of fertilized egg implanting into the womb and being
able to grow.

CONDOMS
IVE
-Are the only type of contraceptive that can both prevent pregnancy and protect against sexually
transmitted infections (STI).
How CONDOMS work?
-A barrier method of contraception. Designed to prevent pregnancy by stopping sperm meeting the
egg.

IMPLANT
IVE
-Contraceptive implant (Nexplanon) is a small flexible plastic rod that’s placed
under the skin in your upper arm by a doctor or nurse.
How it works?
The implant steadily releases the hormone progestogen into the bloodstream,
which prevents the release of an egg each month (ovulation).
It also thickens the cervical mucus, which makes it more difficult for sperm to move
through the cervix.

IUD (INTRAUTERINE DEVICE, COIL)
-An IUD is a small T-shaped plastic and copper device that’s inserted into your womb (uterus)
by a specially trained doctor or nurse.
How it works?
The IUD works by stopping the sperm and egg from surviving in the womb or fallopian tubes.
It may also prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the womb.
The IUD is similar to the IUS (intrauterine system) but works in a different way. Instead of
releasing the hormone progestogen like the IUS, the IUD releases copper. Copper changes the
make-up of the fluids in the womb and fallopian tubes, stopping sperm surviving there.

IUS (INTRAUTERINE SYSTEM)
-An IUS is a small, T-shaped plastic device that's put into your womb (uterus) by a doctor or
nurse.
How it works:
The IUS is similar to the intrauterine device (IUD), but instead of releasing copper like the
IUD, it releases the hormone progestogen into the womb.
It thickens the cervical mucus, which makes it more difficult for sperm to move through the
cervix, and thins the lining of the womb so an egg is less likely to be able to implant itself
