Dressmaking
 refers to the craft of sewing
clothes and dresses. It is the art of
sewing a beautiful dress from
fabric.
The Difference of Dressmaker and
Tailor
 Dressmaker specializes in the clothes for women
including dresses and blouses, suits, evening
wear, wedding and bridesmaid’s gown and
sportswear.

 Tailor makes clothes for men such as


sportswear and suits, jackets, pants and coats.
History of Dressmaking
 During the ancient times, some people did not able to consider dressmaking as
one of the areas in livelihood education for the reason that they did not have the idea
as what are the things that can contribute to themselves. In some other way, as what
they have observed that some people who were already engaged in this learning area,
find a way on how to earn for living. Thus, through time learning skill and theories
about it, can contribute a lot to the development of one self. Since dressmaking is an
old profession, some historians argued that its history goes back upon the inventions of
the needles. Finally dressmaking as a career become very popular and common in their
place once woven fabrics like linen and silk become norm.
SEWING TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

 Sewing equipment different tools are used in garment


construction. The skillful use of the different sewing
equipment will help take body measurement and drafting
pattern with accuracy and speed. Success in sewing calls for
the right tools at the right time. All tools must be appropriate
in a proper order and one must know how to use them to save
time and produce the best result.
MEASURING TOOLS

Measuring tools are so important for the
perfect fit and shape of any garment.
Even if you are an absolute beginner, you
will need to measure seam allowances,
hems and marking.

CUTTING TOOLS
Cutting tools are instruments that serve well if properly
maintained. Sharp cutting tools make clean cuts and well-
defined notches and they do not damage fabric. On the
other hand, dull tools slow the cutting process, and make
your hand and wrist tire easily. Sewing cutting tools
should not be used for other household task. Cutting tools
must be sharpened regularly and the joints are oiled
occasionally for better use.

Press Button
 Press buttons are available in different sizes and
weights and are used to hold edges that will not
have much strain when the garment is worn. It has
two sections: a stud and a socket. The press buttons
have four holes into which button-hole stitches are
made to hold them firmly to the garment.

Hook and Eyes/Loops

 is a very simple and secure method of


fastening garments together. It consists of a
metal hook, commonly made of flattened
wire bent to the required shape, and an eye
of the same material into which the hook
fits.

Zipper

 A zipper, zip, fly, or zip fastener, formerly


known as a clasp locker, is a commonly
used device for binding the edges of an
opening of fabric or other flexible
materials.

Elastics
 are used in areas where stretching is desired.
There are different types of elastics available in
the market and should be selected carefully
according to the end use of the garment. It can
be used as a casing or can be stitched directly
on the garment.

Tapes and Cords
 Different types of tapes and cords are
available which are both functional as well
as decorative. They come in a variety of
types, widths and colors and its selection
should depend mainly on its end use
Common tapes available are seam tape, binding tape,
twill tape, piping, hem facing, ribbon tape.
Frog Fastening

 is an ornamental braiding
consisting of a button and a loop,
for fastening the front garment.

Velcro
 is the commercial name for loop and hook
fasteners. Velcro is a set of two tapes one with a
looped napped surface and other with a hooked
napped surface. When both the surfaces are
pressed together they grip and remain locked
until pulled apart.

 are one of the most interesting types of
fasteners. Buckles are available in plastic,
iron, brass, steel and other such materials.
The market is filled with a wide variety of
shapes and sizes.
