TECHNOWARE
 TECHNOWARE is made up of
hardware, software and network
designed to deliver integrated solutions
for business advantages. It consists of
smart technologies and consumer
electronics. Technoware are innovative
solution technologies that may initially
look expensive but considering the
reduction of development risks and best
practice design gain, such may become
advantageous to an organization.

 MACHINE-READABLE TECHNOLOGIES are automatic identification (AID) devices used
to help machines identify, capture, and make data available about an object without requiring
manual data-entry routines. AIDs include optical-character recognition (OCR) for scanning
standard documents, radio-frequency identification (RFID) for tracking the location of goods,
magnetic-ink character recognition (MICR) for checks and financial papers, and biometrics for
human identification commonly utilized for security purposes . Such technologies have been
around since Thomas Edison invented the phonograph where vinyl was used as the medium to
capture and record sounds, music and anything audible. In the succeeding discussions, we will
focus on the functions of various automatic identification (AID) devices.

 Optical-Character Recognition (OCR) is the mechanical or electronic
conversion of typed, written or printed texts or images into computer-
readable codes. The process involves three steps, namely: 1) photo-
scanning of the text character-by-character, 2) analysis of the scanned
image, and 3) the translation of the character image into character
codes. The OCR uses pre-printed characters that can be read by a
light source such as a scanner and change it into machine-readable
codes. Common OCRs are the handheld wand reader which are often
used in malls and supermarkets to read retail prices from price tags,
and the optical mark reader (OMR) used in reading shaded marks
such as in ballots during elections and from the civil service
examination answer sheets.

 Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) are tags placed on object, animals, or even persons. It
is a wireless type of communication that utilizes electromagnetic or electrostatic coupling. We
commonly see such attached to the merchandise sold in mall shops and stores. It prevents theft
of goods and provides security to animals and humans

 Magnetic-Ink Character Recognition (MICR) is a character recognition device mainly used by
the banking sector to facilitate the clearing of cheques and other related financial documents.
The MICR line, which is located at the bottom of a cheque and other financial documents like
vouchers, contains the document type indicator, bank code, bank account number, cheque
number , amount and some other control codes.

 MICR codes, unlike barcodes are easily Lesson 24 readable by humans. MICRs make use of
two types of fonts, namely, E-13B and CMC-7. The E-13B font has 14 character sets while the
CMC-7 has 15. The MICR characters are printed in a document, like in a cheque, using either
of the font types using a magnetic ink or toner usually mixed with iron oxide. The text is read
by an MICR device.

 Biometrics is a term used to denote body measurements and calculations. The term may also
refer to a form of identification and access device in the world of computers. There are two
major types of biometrics, namely physiological and behavioral. Various parts of the body
serve as authentication means when dealing with biometrics.
 The most common Physiological
Biometric is the fingerprint. However,
such may extend to some other vital parts
of the body like the iris, face, hand and
even DNA. Behavioral Biometrics, on the
other hand, are those related to human
actions like signature, voice, or keystroke
which mainly rely on the unique action,
movement or stroke inherent to every
individual.

 SMART CARD TECHNOLOGIES refer to chip cards
commonly made of plastic like debit and credit cards,
ATM cards, discount cards, privilege cards, and the like
that contain a microchip which may be memory or
microprocessor type that is reader through direct contact
with a reader or with a remote contactless radio frequency
interface. A smart card is often used as GSM identification
in mobile phones. It has an edge over the usual magnetic
stripe cards as it is reloadable and has extended features
like on-line services, phone-banking, and automatic
memory dialing. Almost all banks nowadays make use of
smart cards for their ATM cards giving their account
holders the edge to do mobile banking transactions on a
24/7 scheme.

 ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) AND
ROBOTICS are two separate subject matters but
are closely related to each other as AI is
considered to be the most interesting and
fascinating field in robotics. AI focuses on the
development and analysis of algorithms that
learn and manifests intelligent behavior with
least human involvement.
 Robotics, on the other hand, deals with robots
which are programmable machines capable of
carrying out a series of basic routines on its own

 POINT-OF-SALE-SYSTEM (POS) is made-up of an
integrated set-up of hardware and software to facilitate
the collection of payments for goods, merchandise,
and services sold or rendered to customers. Although,
a cash register may be considered as a pointof-sale
facility, it lacks the many functions and features of a
modern day POS. The POS serves as the heart of the
business as it serves some other tasks like inventory
management, sales reporting, labor reporting, price
adjustments, menu customizations, customer
management, staff management, and many more.
There are several significant types of POS designed
and developed for various transaction handling that
include that for a restaurant, bar, retail, small business,
and salon and spa.
 GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) is an earth-
orbiting satellite system used for global navigation. It
makes use of signals from a constellation of satellites to
find out the location of an object or a person. GPS
nowadays are commonly used to map out forests,
control airplanes on air and on land. It has even
innovated farm harvesting and has provided the
military some extended help during emergency
situations when there is a need to locate people. It was
originally developed for military use by the United
States Department of Defense. This worldwide radio-
navigation system of some 24 satellites has become an
unifying part of our society.
 GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) is a facility that helps interpret data for
relationships, patterns and trends analysis. It is designed and developed to capture, store,
manipulate, analyze, manage and present spatial data. GIS is an application that helps people
use the information that is collected from the GPS satellites. The data gathered by a GIS serves
as a guide in conducting geographic analysis. It is commonly used in urban planning, and what
are the impacts to the people living in the area would be. With the use of a GIS, recordkeeping
of geographic phenomena is facilitated and courses of actions. A working GIS makes use of
five (5) key components, namely, hardware, software, data, people, and methods.
