Compression Refrigeration

Compression cycle appliances

Compression refrigeration uses compressors to

drive the cooling process, is driven by electricity
from the mains or solar energy, and cannot
operate on gas or kerosene.
Principal parts of compression Refr.

1. Compressor at

5. Evaporator
6. Accumulator
Compressor
The comp. is that machine takes
refrigerant flowing from the
evaporator & compress it, at
high pressure & temperature to condenser.
Condenser:
Is that part of the refrigeration system in which the
superheated vapor refrigerant is changed from
vapor to liquid.

You can feel with your hand that the condenser entrance is
hot and the exit relatively cool.
Filter drier
The function of the filter- drier is to remove
moisture & impurities from the refrigeration
system.
As the word says, the filter drier has 2 functions
 It filters small particles out of the gas
 It dries the gas

• The filter drier should always be changed

when the compressor is replaced.

Capillary tube

Use to regulate the flow of liquids refrigerant to

the evaporator.

*The length & Diameter of the capillary tube

depends on the size of the compressor and the
kind of the refrigerant used.

UNICEF Ethiopia
Evaporator
The function of the Evaporator is to absorb heat
from the refrigerator cabinet, the heat being
Introduced by:
 Product placed in the refrigerator
 Insulation loss
 Door opening

UNICEF Ethiopia
Accumulator
The function of the Accumulator is trap any
refrigerant liquid that may not have changed
to vapor in the evaporator.

 Condenser fan

UNICEF Ethiopia
Starting relay
 Electrical device which connects and/or
disconnects, starting winding.

UNICEF Ethiopia
Overload protector

All motor-compressor should be equipped

with some type of thermal device which will
protect the motor.

Relation, b/n starting winding & running winding
with starting relay & overload protector.

UNICEF Ethiopia
Thermostat
 Is an automatic temperature control
switch, used to control the temperature of
the refrigerator compartment

Thermostatic bulb sensor

Control Knob

UNICEF Ethiopia
Capacitor
 The starting capacitor is a device which
gives the compressor a high
starting torque.

UNICEF Ethiopia
Condenser Fan
Condenser fan is an electric fan motor, which
blows air over the condenser pipes and
compressor.
