Business Contracting Limited, a premier construction company and developer
established in 1990, is a quality-driven business that contributes to sustainable
development in Nigeria. They are recognized for their significant portfolio of landmark
projects across the commercial, residential and industrial sectors.

Previously operating out of regional offices in Lagos, Port-


Harcourt and Abuja. They are now based in Victoria Island Lagos
from where BCL is well placed to execute complex construction
projects for their existing and future client base.

PROJECTS HANDLED
NAME OF PROJECT: ICONIC TOWERS
RESIDENTIAL CLIENT: CRUXSTONE DEVELOPMENT AND INVESTMENT LIMITED
LOCATION: Victoria Island, Lagos
DESCRIPTION: Cruxstone Development & Investment Limited are the principal developers of the
Iconic Towers (Block A & B) in conjunction with LSPDC. This is a proposed luxury residential estate
located at Sinari Daranijo Street, Victoria Island. This project comprises of seven towers but BCL is
focusing on the first two towers, Block A & B, which is structurally framed with each tower featuring 4
Bedroom Pent House + BQ (2 Nrs.); 3 Bedroom Maisonette + BQ (6 Nrs.); 2 Bedroom Apartment + BQ
(7 Nrs.); 2 Bedroom Apartment (3 Nrs.); 1 Bedroom Apartment (8 Nrs). This is a total of 26 units per
tower and a total floor area of 5000sqrm per tower. Each floor has a height of 3.15m and is structured
with pre-cast ribbed floor. There are 187 piles beneath the ground forming the foundation basis for the
structure.

NAME OF PROJECT: SKYVILLA
Residential High-rise CLIENT: PALTON MORGAN
LOCATION: Ikoyi, Lagos
DESCRIPTION: Palton Morgan Holdings is the client for Skyvilla Residential Development, located on
Probyn road, Ikoyi -Lagos. This luxurious 10-storey structure with a total floor area of 2,500sqm,
comprises 2 blocks of 12 units of 4-bedroom maisonettes and 24 parking spaces each. Other facilities will
include visitors parking spaces, green areas, general lounge, communal pool & deck, a central working
system, communal gym and roof garden with terrace.

NAME OF PROJECT: Nicon Villa
TYPE OF PROJECT: Residential
CLIENT: Private Development
LOCATION: Lekki, Lagos
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a state-of-the-art residential building located in Nicon Town, Lekki,
Lagos - with Business Contracting Limited as the main contractor to this project. This private villa, which
stands on a 2100 square meters hectare of land with a raft foundation, comprises of a luxurious 4-
bedroom with a swimming pool, car garage, steam room, spa, gym, remote controlled roller shutter, water
fountain and features, water treatment plant with an aesthetical landscape and ancillary buildings. The
roofing design of this structure is the steel roof design with gutters and a simply supported slab design.
The entrance of the building is beautified with tyrolene crushed glass external paint, well-structured
ceilings, top notch tile designs, sliding doors and world class kitchen set-up.

WORK EXPERIENCE
MEASUREMENT WORKS:I was involved in the taking off of various elements of buildings. This was
done in relatian to the prepared Bills of Quantities so as to confirm the quantities.

INTERIM VALUATIONS/PHYSICAL MEASUREMENTS: I was involved in the preparation of


valuation reports for subcontractors o site as well as the physical measurements on site to confirm the
accurate quantities of work done

OFFICE AND SITE ADMINISTRATION: Files documentation, improvement on the use of various
software skills e.g AutoCAD, MS Project. On site work inspection and supervision.

SITE PRODUCTIVITY: I was involved in the documentation of Site labour productivity to keep track
of work progress as well as to forecast future costs on site

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: I had the opportunity of studying Contract Documents of projects, as


well as attending a site meeting where I gained some experience concerning contractor and consultant
relationships, professional ethics e.t.c

TRAINING EXPERIENCE

I was priviledged enough to partake in some


Health and Safety Enviroment (HSE) exercises
where i was instructed on the proper way to
put on saefety gears along with following safe
practices on site.
I was also able to partake in a fire hazard
training exercise as well as simple first aid
training.

RELEVANCE OF TRAINING LEARNT AND

CONCLUSION
RELEVANCE OF TRAINING EXPERIENCE

Quantity surveying profession exists to ensure the allocation of the


construction
resources of materials, manpower, machinery, money, methods and
management with the
overriding aim of ensuring value for money spent on construction projects.
Alternatively, Quantity surveying is a professional in the construction
industry that deals with cost related issues. Relevant courses to achieve this
are usually taught in the higher institution through class room lectures and
practical courses. But, due to time constraint and absence of real life
situations these courses don’t give the complete experience needed. However,
the internship is very important so as to equip the student with the basic
practical knowledge, experience and ethics. Through the internship, I was
able to apply some of the theoretical knowledge gained during the four(4)
academic years of my course study.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I have been able to see the practical side of my course of
study. The experiences I gained and lessons I learned during my industrial
training period at BCL has in many ways broadened my understanding of
construction and quantity surveying practices, thereby making me a better
student of quantity surveying and ultimately groomed for the professional
future that lies ahead. Through the training I was able to attain a greater
understanding of how to; prepare material schedule, program of works,
interim valuations, bill of quantities for construction projects. As well as
use various software packages in relation to QS function, etc. I also
learned some professional ethics and how to manage relationship between
clients, consultants and contractors.
This period was indeed an avenue of improving on all theoretical
knowledge accumulated over the years in the classroom and an avenue of
learning how to put them into practical use in the industry. However, these
classroom experiences made it easy for me to promptly understand
everything being done in the industry.
