Historical Meaning
Person’s Ethos
Ethics is connected to Character

Ethics and Morals
Important conceptual distinction
Needed because many use ‘ethics’ and ‘morals’
interchangeably
Disagreement among scholars as to the differences
One school of thought asserts that ‘morality is founded on
spiritual principles’ while ‘ethics relies on materialist and
social consequences of actions’ to determine right or wrong
behaviour
Other schools of thought argue that line between moral and
ethics is arbitrary
And that Ethics is simply a formal branch of Philosophy that
concerns itself with the study of morals and their derivation
According to them, Ethics is a Philosophy of Morals
