1. What is Extended Reality?

The definition of extended reality –

also known as cross reality (XR) – is any
technology that creates computer-
generated environments or objects.
The term encompasses both developed
and future forms of XR. The various
technologies are differentiated primarily by
their relationship between the real and
virtual world.
2. How does XR work?

XR makes use of the device’s central processing

unit (CPU), camera and software to alter the surrounding
perception of the viewer. The software uses the CPU to
process the images collected by the camera and create a
digital environment for the user to interact combining
elements of both the real and the virtual world.
3. Extended Reality Technologies

XR is an umbrella term for all the

immersive technologies.
i) Virtual Reality(VR):

• Virtual encourages users to submerge in a different

world.
• By wearing a VR headset, the user finds him in a
different virtual environment.
• Virtual reality is the replica of the real world and
allows users to interact with the virtual objects
present around him in virtual reality.
• This provides humans an opportunity to build their
own world and gain new experiences.
These are some of the VR
Boxes available in market
• Virtual Reality
Pros & Cons:

Pros:-
 Virtual Reality in education field makes
education more easily and comfort.
 Virtual Reality user can experiment with
an artificial environment.
Cons:-
 The equipment used in virtual reality are
very expensive.
 It consists of complex technology.
 In virtual reality environment we can’t
move by our own like in the real world.
ii) Augmented reality(AR):

• In augmented reality, virtual information and objects are overlaid on the real world.
• This experience enhances the real world with digital images, text, and animations.
• One can access the experience through AR glasses or via screens, tablets, and smartphones.
• This means users are not isolated from the real going on in front of them.
• The most well-known examples of AR are the Pokemon Go game that overlays digital creatures onto the real
world or snapchat filters that put digital objects such as hats or glasses onto your head.
Augmented Reality
Pros & Cons:

Pros:
 Increase user knowledge and
information.
 Ability to Share your experience with
other people in real time over long
distances.
Cons:
 Quite expensive to use it in everyday
life and it might be less accessible for
small businesses.
 It can cause mental health issues.
 It is very costly to develop AR
enabled devices.
iii) Mixed Reality(MR):

• Mixed reality basically describes the mixing of the

“real” and “virtual” worlds through the use of
electronic devices. The term “mixed reality” is closely
related to the term “augmented reality”.

• Mixed reality is also known as “Hybrid Reality”.

• Mixed Reality is accessible through a special kind of

goggles called HoloLens developed by Microsoft.
MIXED REALITY CONTINUATION…
• It displays holographic projections on the visor of the headset and simulates the real and virtual objects.
• For example, putting on an MR device will give you a view of your entire surroundings. You can do whatever
you want, throw a ball, close the windows, etc which will be digitally in your MR headset, but in actual reality,
things will remain as they are.
Mixed Reality Advantages:

• Reduction in Maintenance Calls

Organizations that work with outdated manuals are
slowly leaving that behind. They’re now using Mixed Reality
to limit call out times to maintenance.

• Holograms
Thanks to Mixed Reality, people can generate holograms
to show scenes or objects that never existed.

• Education
Some Mixed Reality apps can help students learn through
communication with virtual objects. Others, like
HoloAnatomy, allow teachers to instruct students remotely.
4. Extended Reality
    Pros & Cons:

Pros:-
• XR enables human beings to feel and interact with a radically different world without leaving their place.
• It saves time, money and resources at the same time.
• It also helps in reducing human impact on the environment by an elimination of transportation.
• Safe training. Those who need to practice in high-risk conditions, such as military or chemists, can train
safely from conventional classrooms.
Cons:-
• Physical harm. Long-term application of VR devices and augmented reality glasses may cause
eye disorders, nausea, faintness and headache.
• The high cost of implementation. The development and implementation of XR solutions and
devices that support this technology are extremely expensive
5. Extended Reality Applications:
WAKING UPTO A NEW
•Military Training REALITY
AR and VR technologies save money, create a much Building a responsible future for immersive
technologies
safer environment for trainees, and help soldiers develop
cognitive skills.

•Entertainment
In movie theatres, virtual reality has been used
to provide audiences with 3D experiences. In the acting
world, real-time rendering and camera tracking provide
immersive experiences to actors, which makes them feel
as if they really within the scene.

•Healthcare
In the healthcare system, extended reality is
being used by medical practitioners to visualize complex
medical procedures. It also assists surgeons to plan for
complicated surgeries.
6. Differences and similarities between AR, VR, and MR
7. Conclusion Extended Reality (XR) tech is making
breakthroughs in finding new ways to
interact with consumers. XR solutions
are augmenting and increasing
productivity of many industries,
including real estate, retail &
eCommerce, education & training,
entertainment,  and more. In a more
distant future we may really see a
world where virtual interaction prevails
over real-life experiences.
