Electron Configuration
Electron Configuration
- Is the arrangement of electrons in
energy levels around an atomic
nucleus.

- It is the short hand representation on

how each electron is arranged among
the orbitals, levels and sublevels.
Electron Configuration
Four Sublevels/ Orbitals

S – SHARP

P – PRINCIPAL

D – DIFFUSE

F - FUNDAMENTAL
Electron Configuration
Sublevels = maximum number of Electrons
Sublevels Maximum number of
Electrons

Remember:

The number of electrons distributed in each

sublevels should not be greater with the
maximum number of electrons designated.

We can distribute number of electrons

lower than the maximum number required
but never greater on the designated
maximum number.
Remember:

- If the number of electrons in

different sublevels exceed to the
maximum number, it might affect the
properties and performances of a
particular atom (element).
How are we going to write the electron
configuration of a given element?

Lets us use a step by step procedure for us

to easily understand the concept.
Electron Configuration
Determine the atomic number of the element that
we are going to use
Electron Configuration
Determine the atomic number of the element that
we are going to use
Electron Configuration
We are going to use the electron configuration
mnemonics devices.
Electron Configuration

In writing the electron configuration. There are 3 rules or principles.

1. Aufbau Principle
2. Pauli’s Exclusion Principle
3. Hund’s Rule
