INVERTEBRATES
Invertebrates

● animals without
backbone.
● Invertebrates range from
a fraction of millimeter to
about 5 centimeters.
Invertebrates Group
● Arthropods

 It is a highly diverse group of invertebrates that

lives on land, included are the following:
1. Insects
--Grasshoppers, butterflies, beetles, ants, etc.
1,000,000 described world species
Characteristics: Three body regions: head, thorax,
abdomen
Six legs attached to the thorax (which has 3
segments)
Adults with 1 or 2 pairs of wings attached to the
thorax
Two antennae
Lateral compound eyes

● Arthropods

 It is a highly diverse group of invertebrates that

lives on land, included are the following :

 2. Arachnids
 Spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites, etc. 65,000
described world species
 Characteristics:
 Two body regions: cephalothorax, abdomen
 Eight legs
 No antennae
 Mouth parts are chelicerae (modified
appendages) which in spiders are fangs
Invertebrates Group
● Arthropods

 It is a highly diverse group of invertebrates that

lives on land, included are the following :
 3. Centipedes. 2,800 described world
species
 Characteristics:
 Well-defined head
 First pair of legs modified for envenomation
(process by which venom is injected
through biting
 Flattened top to bottom
 One pair of legs per segment
 One pair of antennae

● Arthropods

 It is a highly diverse group of invertebrates that

lives on land, included are the following :
 4. Millipedes. 10,000 described world
species
 Characteristics:
 Two pairs of legs per segments, first four
segments have 1 pair legs
 One pair of antennae
 Well-defined head
 Usually, cylindrical
Invertebrates Group
● Cnidarians
 They are group of aquatic invertebrates’
animals that includes jellyfish, corals and
sea anemones. They are symmetrical and
they have tentacles that encircle their
mouth. Other cnidarians features include
gastrovascular cavity that has only one
opening, a mouth through which the
animal takes in food and releases waste.
Most cnidarians are carnivorous, and
their diet consists mainly of crustaceans.
They sting their prey with nematocysts
that makes it paralyzed.
Invertebrates Group
● Crustaceans
● All crustaceans have a hard exoskeleton,
(hard, outer coverings) which protects the
animal from predators and prevents water
loss.
● --Examples are crabs, shrimps, lobsters,
barnacles, isopods etc. 44,000 described
world species
● Characteristics:
● Two body regions
● Two pairs of antennae
● 5 or more pairs of legs
● Primarily aquatic, few terrestrial
Invertebrates Group
● Echinoderm
● are invertebrates covered
with rough spiny skin.
--have thousands of tube-like feet at the
underside of their bodies for crawling.
Invertebrates Group
● Mollusks
● --have soft, fleshy body like squid, slugs and
cuttlefish.
● Some mollusks have a hard shell for their body’s
protection the likes are oyster snails and clams.
● Some mollusks like snail have a muscular foot
used for movement on land.
● Squid and octopus have tentacles to catch their
prey and for self defense, they squirt a purple ink
into the water when there is danger, this allows
them to hide and escape from other animals that
may harm them.
Invertebrates Group
● Segmented Worms (Annelids)
● --have soft bodies, they have no legs
and no hard skeleton.
● --have slippery body because their
skin produces a slimy mucus that
helps them glide through the soil.
● --don’t have eyes or nose but they
can detect light and vibrations and
have sense of taste and touch.
Invertebrates Group
● Sponges (Porifera)
--arevery simple animals that live
permanently attached to a location in
the water.
--The body of this primitive animal has
thousands of spores which let water
flow through it continually.
-- Sponges obtain nourishment and
oxygen from this flowing water.
--The flowing water also carries out
waste products.

grouped as arthropods, cnidarians, crustaceans,
echinoderms, mollusks, annelids and poriferan.
