CHAPTER 10: Processing

and presenting data

Calculating and using statistics

Calculate statistics, including mean, median, mode and

range

Select the most appropriate statistics for a particular

problem
Mean, Median Mode and Range
• Mean is calculated by adding all the values and dividing it by the
number of values.

• The median is the middle of the set of numbers. (Middle value

after arranging the data in the ascending order)

• Mode is the most frequently appearing value.

• Range is difference between highest and lowest value

Find the mean median and modal size of the shirt
sold
Find the mean median and modal size of the shirt sold

Mode (Most repeated/frequent)

Median (arrange in ascending order)

Mean
Which statistic gives the best picture of the size of shirt sold?
There is no such shirt size which was 44.125 or 44.5 hence mean and
median does show the best picture hence modal shirt size is regarded
the best average to explain
Statistic of Group frequency table
Mean of Group frequency table: Frequency
Distribution of a Continuous Variable
1. Determine the midpoint of each class interval

2. Find by Multiply frequency with mean interval

3. Find the total of Frequency

4. Find the total of

5. Use the formulae: Mean

Find Arithmetic mean of grouped data:
Step 1 : Determine the midpoint of each class interval
Mean marks for first class interval:
Step 2: Find by Multiply frequency with mean interval
Step 3:Find the total of Frequency

Step 4: Find the total of

(add everything is column)
Step 5: Use the formulae: mean

Distribution of a Discrete Variable
1. Find

2. Find the total of Frequency

3. Find the total of

4. Use the formulae

Find Arithmetic mean of grouped data:
Step 1: Find

Step 2: Find the total of Frequency

Step 3: Find the total of

Step 4: Use the formulae

Median of Group Data
Step 1: Find the position of Median Value:
• When the number of observation is odd, then the median is the value
at the position.
• When the number of observation is even, then the median is the
average of the values at and position.

Step 2: Find Cumulative Frequency

Median of Group Data
Example
Weight of 40 students in Class 8 are given below. Find the median and
model weight.
Median Weight
Step 1: Find the position of Median Value:
Number of students (n) is 40
Step 2: Find Cumulative Frequency

Weight (kg) 48 50 51 53 55 58

No. of students 3 8 9 7 6 7

Cumulative frequency 3 11 20 27 33 40

Cumulative
Median 20frequency is
th defined as a running total of
and 21st position
