Introduction

 The article, “FAT-AES: Systematic Methodology of Functional

Testing for Automotive Embedded Software,” by Hodel et al.,
(2021) is about highly advanced automotive embedded
software technologies.
 The aims of the study was to explore the concepts of multi-
level testing and consequently present a proposal for a method
for analyzing, designing, and evacuation of application systems
for the purpose of deriving a testing plan for the software.
 The advancing complexity of the embedded systems associated
with mechanisms for management and control should have
equally sophisticated tools for designing, developing, and
testing.
Authors

All the authors of the article are renowned Brazilian

engineering scholars at the Polytechnic School of the
University of São Paulo, Escola Politécnica da
Universidade de São Paulo, except Max Mauro Dias
Santos of the Federal University of Technology.
The experienced engineering authors explore wide
range of electronics, electrical and control
engineering concepts, including embedded systems,
automotive software, software design, testing,
planning, quality control, and V-models.
Hypothesis

 The embedded software functions in automobiles

currently are substantially widespread, complex,
and diverse across the vehicular systems.
 Ajuthors hypothesize that developing sophisticated
systems should involve sharing of responsibilities
during the design development of the automobile.
 Also the design should adopt the use of appropriate
tools and ISO 26262 standard requirements to
ensure effective analysis, designing, and
implementation with improved safety, higher
quality, and enhanced performance levels.
Evidence based
 The explored resources suggested that there is a
major challenge in identifying the method to use to
determine the appropriate technique for testing the
automobile systems.
 The evidenced reported in literature show that
most of the original equipment manufacturers
(OEM) utilize the V-model for developing and
testing the systems, categorized into two a range of
steps (Figure 1).

the proposed
methodology
to adopt based
on the review
of evidence is

avoid financial
and legal
consequences
of failures.
Study design

 The researchers utilized a systematic review study

design.
 The use of systematic review was useful as it
provided in-depth insights into the state of art of
the vehicular software testing.
 In order for the authors to achieve the goals of the
study, the systematics review played major roles,
particularly because helped the formulation of the
study’s problem, and a means for premising the
study objectives.
Methodology

 The methodology employed by the authors was

multistep composing of correct formulation of the
research problem based on the available evidence in
literatures and other sources.
 In literature, development of the protocol to use in
systematic review design should follow the
formulation of the founding research problem.
 The authors have however conducted a
comprehensive search of literature, then followed
with brief conclusions of the studies and evidences.
Results

 The automobile industry is associated with a wide

range of challenges and characteristics in the
processes of product development that should be
considered in designing a test strategy.
 Some of the characterizing components of the vehicle
application systems quality standards in adherence to
requirements for testing procedures, security, and
the possible difficulties in implementation.
 As the complexity of the embedded systems increase,
testing, deigns, and development strategies and tools
should equally be advanced.
Discussion & Limitation

The article provides a comprehensive illustration about the

importance of sophisticated testing, verification, and
validation of automobile manufacturing processes.
The proposed strategic plan and design is helpful for the
automobile manufacturing sector because it provide
procedural steps in order to achieve optimum test volume and
document developed activities, enhance safety, and improve
security of the vehicle systems in primary embedded software
systems.
The major limitation is that the systematic review technique
used did not provide the search strategies that were adopted.
Also, the qualitative synthesis and data extraction in this study
did not adequately summarize the studies included.
