Title: Senior seminar Report on
Educational Material Management System In WSU
1. Introduction
Modern and secular higher education in Ethiopia was introduced
in 1950 with the establishment of the then university college of
Addis Abeba. Nowadays Ethiopia has 45 public universities.
Wolaita sodo University(WSU) was established on march
24,2007 by Ethiopian Ministry of education as second generation.
The study focused on “the practice of educational materials
management and utilization in selected wolaita sodo university,
Ethiopia.
1.1. Definition of Educational Materials
Educational materials management is defined as the
function of taking responsibility for the coordination
of planning, purchasing, moving, storing and
controlling materials in an optimum manner so as to
providing a pre – decided service to the customer at a
minimum cost.
1.2. Statement of the problem
The major reason for building and handling a university is to
implement an educational program. A smooth implementation
of such educational program can only occur and the chances of
actualizing its goals enhanced if the university plant or
physical facilities and instructional materials possess some
desirable qualities or standards.
1.3. Objective of the study
1.3.1. General objective
The General Objective of this study was to investigate
the practice of educational materials Management and
to determine the major challenges that affect the
effective utilization of educational materials in wolaita
sodo university, Ethiopia.
1.3.2. Specific objective
 To identify the availability of educational materials in wolaita
sodo university.
 To assess how often the university in wolaita sodo town
perform educational material utilization in teaching learning.
 To illustrate the adequacy of the maintenance activities
carried out on the educational materials in the university of
wolaita sodo.
 To identify the major factors that affect educational materials
management and utilization in wolaita sodo
university,Ethiopia.
1.4. Operational Definition of keyterms
Assessment: the systematic process of investigating on the
management and utilization of educational materials in
wolaita sodo university,Ethiopia.
Educational Materials: are any materials used as input or
resources that can facilitate the overall teaching and
learning process in university system.
Materials Management: it is concerned with the way
physical materials and instructional materials are managed
particularly in the university of wolaita sodo.

 General-Purpose Material
 Recreational Material
 Residential Material
2.Research Objectives and Methodology
2.1. Research Objectives
The main objective of the study was to identify the status of
educational materials management and utilization practices in
Wolaita Sodo University and suggest feasible strategies to
improve the materials management system. To realize this core
objective of the study.
2.2. Research Methods
Observation and interview were the main data collecting
instruments employed in the study. Accordingly,
comprehensive audit checklist was developed in line with
major classification of educational facilities and
infrastructures available in the university.
3.How It Works
 It includes planning, organization, communicating,
directing and controlling of all those activities mainly
concerned with the flow of materials into an
organization. Material management views material
flows as a system.
 It involves ordering and obtaining materials from the
suppliers, introducing the materials to the organization
and monitoring the status of materials. Materials
management is the coordination and control of the
various material activities.

 Higher Education Facilities management defined as
strategically integrated approach to operating, maintaining,
improving and adapting the buildings and supporting
services of an organisation in order to create an environment
that strongly supports the primary objectives of that
organization.
