SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT:
FUTURE CHALLENGES
We are all aware that the earth resources are finite and
when it becomes unmanaged it can eventually lead to
the decline of the environment which can have drastic
effects on the world's economics such as poverty.
What is Sustainable
Development?
Sustainable development is development
that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs .it
upholds the idea that any social
environment and economic advancement
can be achieved within carrying capacity of
the earth's natural resources.
GOAL OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

 The goal of sustainable development is to enable all

people throughout the world to satisfy their basic
needs and enjoy a better quality of life without
compromising the quality of life of future generations.

“We do not inherit this earth from our parents…… we

barrow it from our children” (African proverb)
WHY SUSTAINABILITY
MATTERS?

 Life supporting resources are

DECLINING: Clean air and water,
stable climate, viable forests and
fisheries
 Consumption of life supporting
resources is RISING: population
and consumption increases.
THE 3 MAIN DIMENSIONS

ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMIC

SOCI
AL
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
 What way Ought to Do (Prima Facie Obligation, positive
and negative.)

“As the earth's ecosystem and natural resources

diminished do the various environmental challenges it
faces the ability to mitigate this risk would greatly
affect every individual, community , country, and a
government around the world.”
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
 Peter Wenz- in his article entitled ecology and morality wrote
about human obligation to ecosystem Wenz recognize the prima
facie( at first glance) obligation to our ecosystems. Particularly,
the obligation to avoid destroying them.He states that we have a
prima facie obligation to protect such as ecosystem perspective of
all possible advantage to human beings.
 “this only shows how crucial it is to show our support and work
hand and hand to prevent the further environmental in damages
and the future”
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
 The constitutes are prime facie obligation which could be
stated as positive and negative duty.

 •Positive duty- we have a duty to bring and to mitigate

the risk and threats to our environment.
 • Negative duty- we have a duty to do no harm or
damage to our environment.( the word NO makes the
statement negative)
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT

As an individual we have the moral obligation to do our part

both these duties (positive and negative) from our obligation to
protect the environment from ourselves we have to recognize
our responsibility to the environment by exercising prudence
and frugality in the use of earth's resources. Some examples of
support and responses on environmental challenges instead of
doing the” wait and see” attitude one can.
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT

 Join/participate in awareness-raising campaigns that can greatly

help in promoting prudence and responsibility for environment

 Join participate in awareness programs that promote a better

understanding of the causes and consequences of the majority of
environmental issue such as climate change, water scarcity, and
preservation of endangered species can be done and supported by
the community
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
 Private sectors can strengthen the environmental advocacy through the
outreach and education among virous stakeholders through working
along side by the government of NGO

 Widespread promotion of environmental advocacy programs and

environmental best practices and successes stories and environmental
preservation in the mainstream media and internet will be more
exposed to the climate related stories as well as causes and
consequences.
