Pre Logica – Bill Doody

• Construction Industry 20+ years

• Managed own business specialising in Flues and Chimneys

• Reviewed career direction in 2001

• Decided to change completely

• 2001-2003 HND Computing

• 2003-2005 BSc (Hons) Computer Science

Logica – Bill Doody

• Entered as a grad Sept 2005 (PD1)


• Rang before I got here to try and influence role
• First role started as an analyst – BT CDL project
• The role was going to UK wide so I positioned myself to be that
person
• Started looking to build a team to become a Team leader (PD2)
• Applied for ‘Grow a Star’ (similar to Aspire)within first month of
joining and was successful
• July 2006 became PD2 – now managing small team
• Stayed on project until late 2007
• Then managed EUT Shared Services team until late 2008 – pushing
for PD3 now
• Managed to get PD3 in early 2008
• ABD program – France until Feb 2009
• Feb 2009 DISC Program as PM – secured PD4 early 2010

Tips#1

• Be proactive with managing career


• Do not wait for your People Manager to push you
• Believe in yourself and sell yourself
• Network, let people know you exist
• Keep an open mind and plan to change your plan
• Take roles as stepping stones to other roles
• Be aware of what is happening around you
• Be realistic with where you are at in your career and the pressures
that the business faces externally/internally

Tips#2

• If you are not satisfied discuss it with someone sooner rather than
later – don’t let it fester

• Care for your colleagues, don’t be selfish, help them along too
• Be a corporate citizen
• Try to look 3 months ahead, always have an exit plan
• Don’t let others supply you the role if you can help it – you choose
• Avoid the bench if you can – it is not a rest for a few weeks
• Think about culture and work life balance within Logica
• Do try to focus on the positive – we are very good at looking at the
negative – just look the current status of the worlds financial
markets

Avoid

• Don’t isolate yourself on a client site


• If you are there make an effort to stay in touch with Logica
• Be a corporate citizen
• Try and manage a day in a Logica office
• Get involved in socials

• Don’t ignore managing your career

• Try not to annoy the people that can influence your career

• Don’t do nothing

• All the opposites of the Tip’s!
