TYPES OF RESEARCH BY

PURPOSE
Presented by: Aqsa Riaz
Roll no: Msf2100402
Presented to: Dr. Shafqat khan
Types of research by purpose
 Basic Research
 Applied Research
 Action Research
 Evaluation Research
 Research and Development
Basic Research
 It is conducted solely for the purpose of theory
development and reinforcement. (L.R. Gay)
 It is also called as "pure research" or
"Fundamental research".
 Less attention to direct field application.
Characteristics
 Laboratory approach
 Animals as subjects
 Control and precision
 Research workers
Example
 For example, much basic research has been
conducted with animals to determine
principles of reinforcement and their effect on
learning.
 Like the experiment of skinner on cats gave the
principle of conditioning and reinforcement.
Applied research
 “It is conducted for the purpose of applying or
testing theory and evaluating its usefulness in
solving educational problems” (L.R. Gay)
 Called as “Field research”
Characteristics
 Field Approach
 Humans as Subjects
 Less presicion and control
 Researchers are educationists
Example
 For example, applied research tests the
principle of reinforcement to determine their
effectiveness in improving learning (e.g.
programmed instruction) and behavior (e.g.
behavior modification).
Action research
 The purpose of action research is to solve
practical problems through the applications of
scientific method " (L. R. Gay)
 It is focused on immediatel application.
 It is concerned with a local problem.
Action Research
 Classroom Approach
 Pupils as subject
 Level of control and precision
 Researchers are teachers
Example
 Impact of physical punishment.
 Lack of interest in class.
 A study of reasons of dropout.
Evaluation Research
 The purpose of evaluation research is to
facilitate decision making regarding the
relative worth of two or more alternative
actions.
 Determine whether something was “good” od
“bad”.
Types of evaluation research
 Formative evaluation is designed to inform
and improve a program while it is being
developed or implemented
 Summative evaluation is designed to make
decisions regarding the overall quality of the
program being evaluated
Example
 The computerized algebra program being used
in Williams Middle School has been installed
properly, is being used properly, and student
achievement is increasing as a result of its use
Research and Development
 The development of effective products for use
in schools
 Example
 The development of a Smart Board to enhance
a teacher’s use of technology in the classroom.
R&D Products
 Techer-training materials
 Learning materials
 Sets of behavioral objectives
 Media material
 Management system
