WORKSHOP SAFETY

THE PREVENTION OF EYE INJURIES

80% of our body movement
is controlled by our eyes
• Safety glass is a must
Always be safety conscious
• Wear safety glass in the workshop at all times
Choose the appropriate eye protection for
every type of job
• Face Shield is used to protect the eyes from
grinding sparks
Common eye injury in the work shop

• Foreign matter gets inside the eye

Major eye injury
• Blindness due to eye burn
Protect your eyes from radiation
• Welding Mask is use to protect the eyes from
extreme heat and ultra violet rays
Appropriate safety gear
• Safety glass
• Ear muff
• Dust mask
• Safety cap
Prevention of eye injury
Prevention of eye injury
• Structure of the eye
The eye is surrounded by sensory nerves and
tissue that perform several functions
Parts of the eye
The SCELRA- outer part of the eye it maintains
the shape of the eye ball
Parts of the eye
• IRIS- Colour membrane of the eye behind the
cornea
Parts of the eye
• Pupil – the black part of the eye. The iris and
pupil are covered by a protective coating
called the cornea
Parts of the eye
• Cornea – It covers the iris and pupil
Parts of the eye
• Lens – it is behind the iris and pupil which
projects the image into the retina
Parts of the eye
• The retina which is located at the rear of the
eye is lined with receptor cells called rods and
cones
Parts of the eye
• Rods and cones transforms light into chemical
nerve pulses which are transmitted to the
brain by the optic nerve
Parts of the eye
• Optic nerve transmit the image to the brain
Eye hazards in the workshop
• Follow safety rules and procedures
Eye hazards
• Flying foreign matters from the machine
Eye hazards
• Extreme heat
Eye hazards
• Chemicals and other toxic substance
Eye hazards
• Eye is the most sensitive part of the body, and
it must be protected from
Eye hazards
• Grinding sparks – foreign objects entering the
eye
Eye hazards
• Physical blow can cause double vision
Eye hazards
• Foreign bodies is the most common
Removing foreign bodies
• Ask for medical help if foreign body is
penetrating the eye ball
Foreign particles from:
• Un guarded machine like drilling machine
Grinding machine
Source of foreign matters
• Any one of this can cause eye injury
• Any of these particles can cause penetration
to the eyes
Eye hazards
• Substances and other toxic materials
Eye hazards
• Chemicals
Eye Hazards
• Chemicals and lubricants are potentially
harmful if brought in contact with the eyes
Eye hazards
• Chemicals and cleaning agents
Handling of chemicals are harmful if it
produces:
• Potential hazards

THESE ARE ALL HAZARDOUS TO THE EYE

Eye hazards due to chemicals
• Three main factors that determines the
severity of the chemical reaction
Eye hazards
• Radiation
Eye hazard due to radiation
• Intense light
• Welding spartks
Types of radiation
• Types of radiation that could get inside the eye
Ultra Violet Radiation
• This can damage the cornea of the eye
Eye hazard due to radiation
• Radiation can damage the cornea which cause
cataracts when the lens of the eye is affected
Eye hazard due to radiation
• Range of radiation that affects the eye
Radiation in the workshop
• Possible source of radiation
Eye hazard due to radiation
• Extent and damage to the eye is dependent
on:
Eye hazard due to radiation
• Intense visible lights or glare can cause
irritation
Eye hazard
• Poor light levels
Either poor or too much light can cause eye
hazard
• Too much light can cause eye irritation and
stress
Eye hazards
• Proper light in the workshop
Poor or too much light
• Causes of temporary blindness or
disorientation that might cause accident
Having look at the different eye hazards control
measures must be in placed

• What control measures are needed

Control measures
• Check for any possible hazards
Control measures
• Something must be done
Control measures
• After checking the possible hazards it must be:
Identified hazards
• Protruding objects must be eliminated
Possible hazards
• Must be removed
Possible hazards
• Must be eliminated
Identified hazardous chemicals
• If possible must be substituted with a lower
concentration but perform same function
Control measures for eye hazards
• Engineering and administrative control must
be used
Control measure to prevent eye injury
• Provision of machine guards
Control measure
• Provide plastic shield to prevent radiation
Control measure
• Use of ventilation and exhaust
Control measure for eye hazards
• Exhaust system removed airborne contaminant to
reduce the unsafe level of concentration.
Administrative control includes:
• Things to do:
Provision of filter screen
• To reduce the level of welding radiation
Control measure
• Use of PPE
Control measure
• Use of appropriate PPE
Control measure
• Use of PPE
Control measure
• Safe work procedure in grinding
Control measure
• Safe work procedure in drilling
Control measure
• Proper welding practice
Control measures
• Use of protective equipment and follow safe
work procedure
Control measures
• Read and observed safe work practices rules
and regulation
Last line of control
• USE OF PPE
Eye protection equipment
• Use the correct PPE for a given task
Choose the correct PPE
• Do the right thing
Criteria for choosing the PPE
• Choosing the eye protection is dependent on
Basic type of eye protection
• Common eye protection
Function of safety glasses
• Safety glasses
Eye protection
• Function of safety glass
Wrong type of safety glasses
• Brittle glass is not applicable for safety
Wrong safety glasses
• Sun glasses are not appropriate in the work
shop
Depending on your vision
• Have your eyes checked for appropriate glass
Other type of eye protection
• Goggles are perfectly fitted for safety reason
Special type of goggles
• Sealed all over
Special eye protection
• Provision for ventilation
Special type of eye protection
• Safety goggles
Other type of eye protection
• Protection from grinding sparks
Eye protection
• For special task like grinding and chipping
Other type of eye protection
• Protection from radiation
Special eye protection
• Refer to manufacturer’s recommendation
Eye protection
• Safety and comfort must be considered
Follow safety practice
• Know the location of first aid kit
First aid for eye injury
• Be familiar with this facilities
