SUBTRACTING
POLYNOMIALS
identify like terms.
OBJECTIVES
Q and A Portion!
If 4a + 5a= 9a, then
3b + 7b= ____?
10b
If 7a + 5a = 12a ,
2 2 2
then
8b + 6b = ___?
2 2
14b 2
If ab + ab= 2ab,
then cd + 2cd=__?
3cd
If ab + cd= ab+ cd,
then cd + ef =__?
cd + ef
If 2a + 2b + 3a= 5a + 2b,
then
2x + 2y+ 3x= __?
5x + 2y
Like Terms - terms that contain the same variables
raised to the same power.
a. 2s2 + 3s2 + s
= 2s2 + 3s2 + s Identify like terms.
Adding Polynomials
Add the following.
A. (4m2 + 5) + (m2 – m + 6)
Adding Polynomials
Some people prefer to add polynomials by stacking them. If
you choose to do this, be sure to line up the like terms!
+ (7a2 + ab - 2b2)
Adding Polynomials
TRY THIS!
Add the following polynomials.
3) 2a 3a 5a a 4a 3 3a 3a 9a 3
3 2 3 3 2
Adding Polynomials
To subtract polynomials, remember that
subtracting is the same as adding the opposite. To
find the opposite of a polynomial, you must write
the opposite of each term in the polynomial:
Subtracting Polynomials
Subtract the following:
Subtracting Polynomials
(7m4 – 2m2) – (5m4 – 5m2 + 8)
Rewrite subtraction
as addition of
= (7m – 2m ) + (–5m + 5m – 8)
4 2 4 2
the opposite.
Subtracting Polynomials
(3x2 + 2x + 7) - (x2 + x + 4)
= (3x2 + 2x + 7) + (- x2 - x - 4)
3x2 + 2x + 7
+ -x2 - x -4
2x2 + x + 3
Subtracting Polynomials
(–10x2 – 3x + 7) – (x2 – 9)
= (–10x2 – 3x + 7) + (–x2 + 9)
–10x2 – 3x + 7
+ –x2 +9
–11x2 – 3x + 16
