ADDITION

OF POLYNOMIALS
Objectives
In this lesson, the students must be able to:
1) add polynomials, and;
2) solve problems involving addition of
polynomials.
(Sing to the tune of ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR
BOAT)

Same signs, add and keep;

Different signs, subtract.
Take the sign of the larger number.
Then, it will be exact.

(Working In Pairs)
# 1. How do you add:

3 Balloons + 2 Stars = ?
# 2. Add

2 Dresses + 2 Fishes = ?
# 3. Add

ABSTRACTION
In a POLYNOMIAL, terms
that are exactly alike
except for their numerical
coefficients are called
LIKE or SIMILAR TERMS.
Examples:

{ 4a, – 3a, + 2a }

{ 7b, 3b, - 25b, b, -6b }

{ -5x2 , - 20x2 , + 10x2 , - 3x2 , 50x2 }

While terms
that are different from
each other are called
UNLIKE TERMS or DISSIMILAR
TERMS.
Examples:

{ 4c, – 3a, + 2e, 8x, - 12y }

{ 7b, 3d, - 9, 5f }

{ -15x , - 2x , + 33x , - 13x , 11x }

ANALYSIS
Add
SIMILAR TERMS

+
4 Hearts + 1 Heart = ?
4h + 1h = 5h
Add
DISSIMILAR TERMS

+
3 Balloons + 2 Stars = ?
3b + 2s = 3b + 2s
Add DISSIMILAR TERMS

2 Dresses + 2 Fishes = ?
2d + 2 f = 2d + 2f
Add DISSIMILAR TERMS

4 Note heads + 1 Heart = ?

4n + 1h = 4n + h
Add SIMILAR TERMS

3 Note heads + 1 Note Head = ?

3n + 1n = 4n

Rules for Adding Polynomials

* To add polynomials, simply combine similar

terms.
* To combine similar terms, get the sum of the
numerical coefficients and annex the same
literal coefficients.
* If there is more than one term, for convenience,
ADDITION of Monomials
1) Add the following: 4a, – 3a, and 2a

= 4a – 3a + 2a Re - arrange
= 4a + 2a – 3a Combine terms with similar signs
= 6a – 3a SIMPLIFY

ADDING Binomials
Add – 3b + 2c, 8b – 10c, and -12a + c.

3b + 2c
8b – 10c
+ -12a + c
-12a + 11b – 7c
ADDING Trinomials
Add 4a – 3b + 2c, 5a + 8b – 10c,
and -12a + c + 8.

4a – 3b + 2c
5a + 8b – 10c

GENERALIZATION

To add polynomials, combine similar

terms, and simply annex the unlike terms
(or just copy as it is).
Then, if possible, re-write your final
answer in its standard form.
