Define communication based on the word
cloud below.
Verbal communication occurs when we
engage in speaking with others.
Non-verbal communication includes facial
expressions, posture, eye contact, hand
movements, and touch.
One important thing to remember about
written communication, especially in the
digital age, is the message lives on,
perhaps in perpetuity.
The act of listening does not often make its way onto
the list of types of communication. Active listening,
however, is perhaps one of the most important types of
communication because if we cannot listen to the
person sitting across from us, we cannot effectively
engage with them. Think
Think about from a
personal perspective –
the images we post on
social media are meant
to convey meaning –
to communicate a
message.

In some cases that message might be, look at me,

I’m in Italy or I just won an award.

Lead Discussion

WHAT IS AN
EFFECTIVE
GROUP
DISCUSSION?
Group Discussion
The literal definition of a group discussion is obvious: a
critical conversation about a particular topic, or
perhaps a range of topics, conducted in a group of a
size that allows participation by all members.
A group discussion is a type of meeting, but it differs
from the formal meetings in a number of ways:
• It may not have a specific goal
• It’s less formal, and may have no time constraints, or
structured order, or agenda.
• Its leadership is usually less directive than that of a meeting.
• It emphasizes process
• Leading a discussion group is not the same as running a
meeting
LEAD THE DISCUSSION
• Setting the topic.
• Fostering the open process.
• Involving all participants.
• Summarizing or clarifying important points, arguments, or
ideas.
• Wrapping up the session.
• Follow-up
DISCUSSION LEADERS

• Use encouraging body language and tone of voice, as well as words.
• Give positive feedback for joining the discussion.
• Be aware of people’s reactions and feelings, and try to respond
appropriately
• Ask open-ended questions.
• Control your own biases.
• Encourage disagreement, and help the group use it creatively.
• Keep your mouth shut as much as possible.
