DEFINITION

• Approach to leadership that emphasizes building the leader’s legitimacy


• It focuses on build honest relationships
• Based on ethics, promoting openness
• By building trust and generating enthusiastic support from their subordinates, authentic
leaders are able to improve individual and team performance.
• This approach is commonly used by leaders by various companies
WHAT IS AUTHENTICITY

The word authenticity is the state of


something being authentic, or legitimate
and true. Authenticity is important when
the value of something is dependent on
where it came from or how it was made.
QUALITIES

• Self-awareness: An ongoing process of reflection and re-examination by the leader of his


or her own strength, weaknesses, and values
• Relational Transparency: Open sharing by the leader of his or her own thoughts and
beliefs, balanced by a minimization of inappropriate emotions
• Balanced Processing: Solicitation by the leader of opposing viewpoints and fair-minded
consideration of those viewpoints
• Internalized Moral Perspective: A positive ethical foundation adhered to by the leader
in his or her relationships and decisions that is resistant to outside pressures
MEASURES

• Leader Authenticity Scale (LAS): The LAS measures the leader’s tendency to behave
genuinely regardless of formal job titles to acknowledge accountability for mistakes, and
to avoid manipulation of subordinates.
• Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ): includes sixteen items grouped into four
major subcategories: self-awareness, relational transparency, internalized moral
perspective, and balanced processing.
• Authentic Leadership Inventory (ALI): ALI provides a more rigorously developed and
tested measure of authentic leadership.
• Authentic Leadership Inventory (ALI): used to measure individual authenticity.

CONCLUSION

• Authentic Leadership is based on values such as ethics, honesty. The leader must
understand that before building the authentic leadership it must have a background in
order to demonstrate its authenticity.
• This is important in organizations in order to motivate its employees, and spread the
necessity of goals achievement.
• Honest relations are critical in organizations, because the leader is able to deal with the
insecurities that workers may have in the company. This authenticity of leadership is
required in the TOP level of organizations such as CEO.
