TALKING ABOUT ABILITY

An expression about ability that is used to show what we are able / can do. Expressions
talking about ability in English generally use special word phrases, namely using several
modal words, for example such as can, could, beable, and so on. To better understand further,
here is a detailed explanation of how to use the expression to talk about ability.
A. Explanation about expressing present ability

1. To show ability in today's context, we can use the words can / cannot / can't.
Example of sentences:
 Sally Harmer, of Darlington, can squeeze juice from an orange between her shoulder blades.
(Sally Harmer, berasal dari Darlington, dapat memeras air jeruk diantara tulang bahunya)

2. We can also use the word be able to to express ability (ability).

Example of sentences:
 James is able to do many hairstyles by only using scissors.
(James dapat melakukan banyak model rambut dengan hanya menggunakan sisir)
B. Explanation about expressing ability in the future

To show the ability (ability) in the future, we can use the word will be able to which is
used to make predictions.

Example of sentences:
 Everyone will be able to ride a flying car by 2040.
(Setiap orang akan dapat mengendarai sebuah mobil terbang pada tahun 2040)
C. Explanation of Expressing ability with perfect forms

To show ability using the perfect form, we can use the word be able to.
Example of sentences:
 He has been able to speak fluent French since he was a child. > present perfect
(Dia sudah dapat berbicara bahasa Perancis dengan lancar sejak dia masih kecil. >
bentuk present perfect)
 If she had been able to type, she might have got the job. > past perfect
(Jika dia sudah dapat mengetik, dia mungkin sudah mendapatkan pekerjaan. > bentuk past
perfect)
D. Explanation of Expressing past ability (past)

To show ability in the past, we use different verbs for general and specific abilities.
1. To describe the ability at any time in the past (general ability), we can use the words could,
couldn't or (not) be able to.
Example of sentences:
 Pretty, the little puppy, could / was able to stand up on her two feet.
(Pretty, anak anjing kecil, dapat berdiri dengan kedua kaki belakangnya)
 That man wasn’t able to / couldn’t sing until he joined the competition.
(Pria tersebut tidak bisa bernyanyi sampai dia mengikuti kompetisi tersebut) [sc:kodeadsense]
2. To describe abilities on an occasion that only happened in the past (special abilities) we can
use the words couldn't, (not) be able to, and (not) manage to.
Contoh kalimat:
 I wasn’t able to send her a message yesterday.
(Saya tidak dapat mengirimkan pesan kepadanya kemarin)
 I managed to get home on time after school.
(Saya berusaha untuk dapat sampai di rumah tepat waktu setelah sekolah)
 I didn’t manage to visit her house yesterday.
(Saya tidak dapat berkunjung ke rumahnya kemarin)
 I couldn’t visit her house yesterday.
(Saya tidak bisa berkunjung kerumahnya kemarin)
