Rain Control System

ATA30

• Problem of rain
•- Caused spreading of WATER.
- Rain obstruct pilot’s visibility
• May removed by:
- Windshield wiper.
- Chemical repellent.
- Flow of air (pneumatic)

Rain Control System

Windshield Wiper System

Electrically operated:
Controlled by :
-common switches, provides ranging wiper-action speeds
-control the stowing of the wiper blades in a PARK position
Consist of:
- DC drive motor, a control switch, a resistor box, a flexible

drive shaft, a torques converter and windshield-wiper

assembly.

Rain Control System

Windshield Wiper System
Hydraulically and pneumatically operated:
• pressure from hydraulic/pneumatic power system

Inside the actuator is a piston that moves a rack and

pinion gear system.

A alternately connects a pressure or return line to

opposite side of the actuator, cause the piston to move

back and forth.
A speed control valve allows the pilot to select the

speed at which the wipers will operates.

Rain Control System

Windshield Wiper System Operation Procedure

Never operate windshield wipers on a dry windshield.

-

Keep the blades clean and free of any contaminants to

-

avoid scratches.
For operational testing, flood windshield with ample
-

quantities of clean water and keep it wet while the wiper

blades are moving.
Tension check.

Chemical Rain Repellent System
Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology

Problem of RAIN
-Rain drops, form an opaque layer on surface of
windscreens, spoiling visibility
- Rain repellent is to prevent water from reaching the
surface of glass and is broken up into small globules
which are readily blown off by the airflow.

Repellent  chemically treated silicone fluid applied before

flight, effective when speed of A/C is excess of 50knots
- Consist of pressurized fluid containers, a selector valve,
solenoid-actuated valves, spray nozzles, push button
switches, a control switch, a time-delay relay, and necessary
plumbing.

Chemical Rain Repellent System

-raining condition, system is on and repellent is spread

evenly with the wiper blade.
Do not sprayed, unless the windshield is wet and the
-

wipers are operated.

- effect of the rain repellent cause the water to form
small globules/beads and quickly blown away in flight.

Pneumatic Rain Removal System

used in some turbine-powered aircraft.
•high-pressure compressed air is ducted from
the engine bleed air and is directed up against the
outside of the windshield as high velocity sheet of air.
• this air blast the rain away effectively.

WINDSCREEN CABIN WINDOW

DE-MISTING SYSTEMS

 At altitude the low atmospheric temperature will maintain

the inside of the windscreens and cabin windows at low
temperature resulting in condensation on the inner surface
and obscured vision.
 Normally kept mist free by blowing hot air, from the air
conditioning system, across the inner surface of the glass.

WINDSCREEN CABIN WINDOW

DE-MISTING SYSTEMS
 Demisting of some windscreens and, all cabin windows is
achieved by using windows of "dry air sandwich" construction.
 The air sandwich is kept dry to prevent internal condensation of
the outer glass, by one of two methods:
 The space between glass layers is vented to the cabin to allow
the pressure in the air space to equalise with cabin pressure.
Venting takes place through a desiccant unit that absorbs
moisture from the air during the venting process to maintain the
dry air sandwich.

WINDSCREEN CABIN WINDOW
DE-MISTING SYSTEMS
-The desiccant used is Silica Gel crystals which are blue
in colour but gradually change to pink or white as they
absorb moisture.
-Frequent checks must be made on the state of the
desiccant which must be replaced when it begins to turn
pink. (Saturated)
- Failure to take this action may result in condensation
within the dry air sandwich which may involve lengthy
rectification to dry out the sandwich or may require the
windscreen/window to be replaced
