ADVERB

CLAUSE (I)
 An adverbial clause is a dependent clause that
functions as an adverb; that is, the entire clause
modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
As with all clauses, it contains a subject and
predicate, although the subject as well as the
(predicate) verb may sometimes be omitted and
implied
 Adverbial clause adalah sebuah klausa yang tidak
bisa berdiri sendiri (dependent clause)  yang
berfungsi sebagai adverb ; yaitu
klausa yang memodifikasi ata sebagai modifier
dari kata kerja, kata sifat atau kata keterangan lain.
adverbial clause sama dengan klausa pada umumnya
yang mempunyai subject dan predikat, meskipun
subjek serta kata kerja (predikat) kadang-kadang
dapat dihilangkan dan hanya bersifat tersirat.
Pay attention to the three sentences
below:
 1. We will leave the classroom soon.
 2. We left the classroom at two o’clock.
 3. we left the classroom when the bell rang

The sentences above have the same function :


explain the verb leave/ left (meninggalkan). But
they have different forms.
 1. soon is adverb (kata keterangan)
 2. at two a clock is adverb frase (frase).
 3. when the bell rang (adverb clause /
subordinative clause).
 subordinative clause is connected with main
clause by conjunction (kata penghubung).
Types of adverb clause
 1. adverb clause refers to time
 (This AC uses conjunction: before, after, when,
while, until, since, as soon as (segera setelah), by the
time (menjelang), and whenever (kapan saja,
apabila).
 Example:
 I haven’t seen her since she got merried.
 He didn’t wait until she woke up
 2. Adverb clause refers to reason and result.
 (This AC uses conjunction: because, as, since
(sebab), so.
 Example:
 Since (Because) I am busy, I can not help her.
(reason)
 We planted many flowers, so (so that) the garden
look beautiful. (result)
 3. Adverb clause refers to purpose.
 (This AC uses conjunction so that and in order
that.
 Examples:
 I came here in order that the job will be done.
 I study hard so that I can pass in English exam.
 4. Adverb clause refers to contradictory.
 (This AC uses conjunction eventhough (meskipun
demikian), although (meskipun), whereas
(sedangkan), while (sementara)
 Examples:
 1. They went out eventhough/although it was
raining.
 2. Sita is lazy, while/whereas her sister is diligent.
 5. Adverb clause refers to qualification (syarat).
 (This AC uses conjunction if (jika), unless
(kecuali), only if ( hanya jika) and providied that
(asalkan).
 Examples:
 1. I will come only if you do.
 2. He will help me provided that I ask him to.
 6. Adverb clause refers to manner (cara).
 (This AC uses conjunction as, like, in the way.
 Examples:
 1. I want to spend my times as I think best.
 2. She prepares chicken like (in the way) my
mother does.
