Introduction
Teaching:
Teaching is a profession of a group called
Teachers, who help an individual to acquire
knowledge, skill, attitudes, values etc..

Effective Teaching:
Effective teaching is defined as the quality
teaching which results in desirable behavioural
changes in students and paves the way for
students learning new things by themselves.
Characteristics of effective teaching
 Presenting the content logically in a sequential order.
 Simplifying the content and presenting them with clarity.
 Using analytical and synthetic approach in teaching.
 Having better communication skills.
 Using a variety of teaching skills.
 Using appropriate teaching aids in classroom teaching.
 Motivating students.
 High student participation.
 Good classroom management.

Factors contributing to effective
teaching
Based on the views of most of the educators ,there are five
factors as key contributors of effective teaching. They are;
1. Teachers subject knowledge, their enthusiasm and
responsibility for students learning.
2. Classroom activities that encourage learning.
3. Assessment activities that encourage learning through
experience.
4. Effective feedback that establishes good learning process in
the classroom.
5. Effective interaction between the teacher and the students,
creating an environment that respects, encourages, and
stimulates learning through experiences.
Teachers subject knowledge, enthusiasm and
responsibility for learning.

 In addition to teachers sound knowledge

about subject matter , he should direct
classroom learning with the cooperation and
participation of the students.

 The teacher besides sharing the subject

knowledge with students , participate in the
class room learning in collaboration with
students will improve subject knowledge of
the students
A teacher with a passion for teaching should
have :

 Mastery in subject he is teaching .

 Curiosity to approach the subject content from
different angles and showing interest in
integrating them in teaching.
 Creative in constantly seeking new ways of
engaging and challenging students.
 Having close contact with students ,nurturing
interactions
 Reflecting on his own teaching and finding the
ways and means of improving it.
Classroom activities that encourage student’s
learning

Effective teaching provides for a classroom which

gives opportunity for students to explore and
experiment. Instead of making students to tell the
correct answer allow them to learn through self
experience . When students learn cooperatively it
develops enthusiasm in them to learn more.
It is better to get feedback from students through
a questionnaire and on the basis of it modify the
classroom teaching environment accordingly. This
is a sure way to make one’s teaching effective in
the class.
Assessment activities that encourages learning
through experience.

It is better to evolve self evaluation technique by

students themselves , teacher may guide students.
Teacher can carry out the summative evaluation
for all students at the end. This will enable the
students to choose and continue the suitable
learning method and get learning experiences.

As individual difference in learning are taken care

of ,all students may learn with interest. By
adopting such evaluation activities ,classroom
environment for effective teaching may prevail.
Effective feedback that establishes efficient
learning process in the classroom.

Providing immediate feedback and motivation

about how far student’s learning has found
progress by observing their activities, will
facilitates good learning atmosphere and improve
learning.
Feedback helps in strengthening learning, is an
important doctrine of educational psychology.
Providing too much or too little feedback will yield
only negative results. So providing appropriate
and meaningful feedback finds an important place
in encouraging students and strengthening their
learning.
Effective interaction between the Teacher and the
Students, creating an environment that respects,
encourages and stimulates learning through experience.

Good teaching is one which approaches students with

kindness and appreciates mutual regard. Teaching is a
caring exercise while learning is an emotional exercise.
Learning style differ from one person to another. Some
prefer to learn through hearing, some like to learn
through seeing ,some others learn by doing. Some may
learn by studying alone; some prefer learning in a group.
Student-Teacher interactions should develop and
strengthen student’s self involvement in learning. Only
then students will approach the teacher and seek
guidence whenever necessary without any hesitation.
Student- Teacher interaction is considered as one of the
most important factors in effective Teaching
Conclusion
To sum up, the factors contributing to
effective teaching are many, student
participation, collaboration and interaction
may lead them for self learning. Self
learning and self assessment is a key for
effective learning, thus teaching must be
effective.
