Primary Function of ECM

MOST IMPORTANT FUNCTION OF ECM IS TO GOVERN
THE ENGINE. THIS IS DONE BY PRECISELY DETERMINING
WHEN AND HOW MUCH FUEL CAN BE INJECTED.
OK, almost… More fuel…?
get ready …. Less fuel…?
NOW !!!

Timing based on: Amount of fuel based on

• Aftercooler Temp electronic governor looking at
• Engine Speed difference of:
• Torque • Actual Engine Speed
• (Timing Calibration) • Desired Engine Speed
• (E-trim Codes)

Malaga
BUT FUEL IS LIMITED TOO !!! 26
3 5 0 0 B

ECM Fuel Limiting

• Amount of Fuel is Limited to Lowest of Fuel Limit and FRC Limit

FRC Limit We aren’t allowed

to give any more
for now !!
Rated
Fuel Limit

We want more
fuel !!!!
Rated Fuel Limit based on:
Engine Speed
FRC (Fuel/Air Ratio Control)
Aftercooler Temp.

Secondary function of ECM is to monitor

sensors, switches, etc.

Backup ECM Functionality

Primary ECM Backup ECM

Full features Limited features

Backup ECM is for ‘Limp Home’ mode only !!

• Backup ECM is only for basic governing of engine

• Independent overspeed protection
• Powers Backup Speed/Timing Sensor
• Does not read any pressure and temperature sensors
• No warnings/derating
• Only protection is overspeed shutdown

ECM has diagnostics for all sensors

If a sensor or wiring is bad:
There will be an active and logged diagnostic

If a sensor or wiring temporarily failed:

There will will only be a logged diagnostic
Special Sensor Diagnostics:
ECM figures out and gives a diagnostic if:
• Primary & Backup Speed/Timing Sensors get swapped Oops !!
• Fuel Pressure & Unfiltered Fuel Pressure get swapped
• Oil Pressure & Unfiltered Oil Pressure get swapped

Diagnostic Conditions:
If Primary Speed/Timing Sensor fails, ECM will still
run engine with the Backup Speed/Timing Sensor

Warnings, Derates, and Shutdowns can be customized !!

• Allows you to program trip points (within set limits)

• Allows you to program debounce times (within set limits)
• Allows you to turn on/off a particular warning or derate
(Most need a factory password)

Note: Even when you turn a warning to OFF,

the ECM will still log an event when a temperature
or pressure reaches the warning trip point.
