INTRODUCTION
• Green computing is the environmentally responsible and
eco-friendly use of computers and their resources.
• In broader terms, it is also defined as the study of
designing, manufacturing/engineering, using and
disposing of computing devices in a way that reduces their
environmental impact.
• It is also called as Green IT
HISTORY

 Green computing was Originated in 1992 at the U.S Environmental

Protection Agency that launched Energy Star program.
 ENERGY STAR  designed as a way to make it easier for every
consumer to shop for environmentally-friendly products.
 Shortly after that the term
“Green Computing’’was coined.
SOME WAYS TO IMPLEMENT GREEN
COMPUTING

Solar computing Carbon free computing

SOLAR COMPUTING

•Computers which run on AC power generated by solar energy.

•Highly energy efficient but a bit expensive.

•Provides at least 8 hours of power.

•Can run even during power cuts.

•It can be even stored as DC and used

later when there is lesser or no sunlight
CARBON FREE COMPUTING
 Carbon Free Computing is a set of programs and products
designed to help individuals and organizations reduce their
impact on the environment.

REQUIREMENTS
• Making green requirements met in IT industries
• Promoting energy efficient PCs to build a green
working environment
• Spreading awareness of alternate solutions, to control the
levels of carbon released into the environment

ADVANTAGES

 GREEN IT is cost-effective due to less energy usage and cooling

requirements
 Sustainable IT helps in the preservation and effective utilization of
natural resources
 It encourages Reuse,Recycle,Reduce these results in a less number
of electronic wastes
 Green computing implementation helps in improving the public
image of an individual or an organisation
DISADVANTAGES

 The initial implementation is costly

 Green IT cause more burden to an individual
 The disparity in the level of understanding across various
companies,professionals,and end-users
 Fewer courses and publications related to green computing
OUTCOMES

 Sustainable energy usage

 Reduce the Impact of Toxic waste on the Environment

 Saves resources and money

 Eco-friendly and environment friendly

HOW AN INDIVIDUAL CAN CONTRIBUTE TO GREEN
COMPUTING

 Turn off monitor

 Turn off hard disks

 System Standby / Sleep

 When you must print, do it double sided.

 Edit on screen, not on paper

 Save to disk instead on printing on paper

CONLUSION

 Various IT organisations in the world started adopting green

computing practices and it has now become the main part of their
day-to-day business activites
 In India IT gaint Wipro has already launched its eco-friendly series
of computing systems called greenware
 By adopting green computing practices we can get an eco-friendly
environment, along with other benefits such as cost
reduction ,energyconservation and waste minimization
