INTRODUCT
ION
BODY MOVEMENT
The study of body movement (body language) is known as kinesics.

Kinesic behaviours: gestures, head movements, facial expressions, eye behaviours,

other physical displays
 used to communicate.

* Paul Ekman & Wallace Friesen have suggested:

There are 5 categories of kinesic behaviours: Emblems, illustrators, affect displays,
regulators, adaptors.
02
overview
EMBLEMS

Emblems: are nonverbal behaviours  have a direct verbal counterpart.

 typically used as a substitute for the verbal channel.

Ex: A baseball coach uses kinesics signals to indicate a particular

pitch/ type of play  conveyed by hand motions (touching the cap,
chest, wrist,..) in a pattern known to the players.
ILLUSTRATORS
Illustrators: are nonverbal behaviours
 directly tied to/ accompany the verbal message.
 used to emphasise, explain, and support a word/ phrase.
AFFECT
DISPLAYS
Affect displays: are facial and body movements

 show feelings, and emotions.

* Primary emotional states include happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, disgust,
contempt, and interest.
* Affect displays may be (un)conscious and (un)intentional.

Ex: purposely smile to convey warmth and affection  intentional

a blush of embarrassment  unconscious

REGULATO
RS
Regulators: nonverbal behaviours

 help to synchronise the back- and- forth nature of conversation

 help to control the flow and sequencing of communication

Ex: Uh-huhm, Mmm-mmm

ADAPTOR
Adaptors: are personal S
body movements

 occur as a reaction to an individual’s physical or psychological state.

Ex: scratching an itch, fidgeting, tapping a pencil.

 performed unintentionally.

 often interpreted by others as a sign of discomfort, uneasiness,

or negative feelings.
