devices in various types of
speech
.
Cohesive devices tell the reader what we are doing in a sentence and
help to guide them through our writing. They signal to the reader what
the relationships are between the different clauses, sentences and
paragraphs. This makes our message more concise and our writing
easier to read. Cohesive Devices are words and phrases used to
achieve a clear, logical flow of thought from sentence to sentence and
from paragraph to paragraph.

Directions: Read the paragraph then write down the cohesive devices used and their function
in the table provided.

If there are two people in the world that I genuinely admire, they would be the persons whose love allowed
me to see the light of God’s creation-my parents. They may not be the perfect couple that one would read in
novels, still I would never wish for another pair. Despite my parents’ meager income, they can send my sisters,
brother, and I to the best schools because of patience, hard work and the dream of molding us into prolific
and benevolent individuals. In the face of countless crises, my parents have retained an indomitable spirit and
have possessed an enduring hope that in seemingly insurmountable circumstances, they will emerge as
victors of this battle. They not only are my parents, but they are also my friends, models, and mentors.
Furthermore, they are the reason for my continued struggle in life and for my meaningful existence.
