Function and goal of a fitness center

• The ultimate goal of a fitness center is to help make its members
healthier.
• Mainly the purpose of fitness centre or GYM is not simply to give you
access to different machines, it is to help you learn new exercises,
techniques and training methods to meet your weight-loss ,muscle
building, heart health or sports performance goals.
BUILDING TYPOLOGY
• A Fitness center falls under the category of a civic type  of buildings as
it is a recreational sports and fitness facility and gives the public a
recreational pleasure . 
• It also fulfills the role of a commercial building.

USER GROUPS
• CUSTOMERS: 
customers mainly comprise of:
• Men of age group 18-50 years
• Women of age group 20-45 years
• Fitness centers are mainly used by working class men and women as it disconnects them from the busy life by
providing  them a refreshing and healthy experience.
• STAFF:
Staff comprises of:
• Receptionist
• Trainers
• Cleaning staff
ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES AND
FUNCTIONING
• STRUCTURAL REQUIREMENTS:
• It should be an RCC framed structure as it is good at countering
shocks and high footfall and can carry heavy equpment.
• MATERIALS:
• Acoustic panelling should be done in the interiors of the building to
minimise noise transmission and sound proofing.
• Rubber flooring should be done for shock resistance and safety of the
floor surface and as well as sound proofing.
• There should be a glass door for entering into the fitness centre it
gives a better aesthetic look, training space should be visible from
outside of fitness center through a glass façade with double glazed or
triple glazed glass panels for better architectural look .
   
SERVICES
• LIGHTING: the building should be both naturally and artificially lit.
• VENTILATION: the building should be properly ventilated by the provision of
window openings and vents.
• AIR CONDITIONING : proper air conditioning should be done through a
centralised AC system or by the provision of various individual air
conditioners  at regular intervals. 
• FIRE PROTECTION should be achieved by the provision equipments like fire
extinguishers , hose pipes etc.
• WATER SUPPLY: A 24 hour water supply should be achived through through a
tank storage system from which the water has to be pumped to various
parts of the building.
