AUDITING OF FSL STEEL

BY SARDAR SHERBAZ
AUDITING BY TUV AUSTRIA
• The TUV team conducts an audit, annually, to
check if the FSL is fulfilling the standards, the
safety and other requirements for the
certification of being a quality steel mill.
• Other than TUV audit, a national level audit is
also conducted twice a year for check and
balance of companies standards.
TECHNICAL AUDIT
• Basically it is a systematic and documented inspection of the
plant for verification of plants standards and quality.
Audit inlcudes:
• Status of tecnology
• Standards
• Energy conservation
• Solid and liquid waste
• Operational efficiency
• Health of the plant
• Safety and precations
• Community service
STANDARDS
• For quality FSL follows ISO-9001
• For environment FSL follows ISO-4000 and for
safety it uses ISO-4500
ENERGY CONSERVATION
• Water restoration tanks are built so that no
water goes out of the plant and the same water
can be reused.
• The grade 40 steel can be quenched to achieve
properties of grade 60 saving a lot of money
and energy.
• The plant plans to introduce a continuous
processing in the future which will save the cost
and energy for re-heating the billet.
SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
• Solid waste is actually the slag that is removed
for the top.
• This is not actually waste because it can be
used to treat waste water and can be used by
other industries as a raw material.
• For example: transportation industry, road and
cement production, fertilizer industry.
LIQUID WASTE MANAGEMENT
• The plant only uses water as liquid for cooling
purposes.
• There is no liquid waste as the water in the
plant does not go outside of the plant and is
treated and reused.
• The water tanks keep water cooled and clean.
OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY
• The plant uses 22000kWh of load and
produces 12500 tonnes per month which is
quite efficient for a steel mill
• However, the efficiency can be increased if the
plant changes to a continous one and
reheating furnace is removed.
HEALTH OF THE PLANT
• The green house gases such as CO2, methane
and NO2 are not produced at the plant so
there is not effect on the environment.
• There might be some gases produced at the
furnace area and for that the pollution control
plant is made to ensure no harmful gas is
emitted.
SAFETY AND PRECAUTIONS
• Safety gear is provided to the workers , which
include, safety helmet and gloves.
• They were provided with an aluminium suit
which reflected heat and was prone to melt.
However, they don’t feel confortable in the
suit and the company’s efficiency decreased.
• The areas that are cautious are labeled red so
one must take care entering that area.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
• The workers are the biggest asset of the company. So,
FSL has entertained its workers with many benefits.
The benefits the FSL has given to workers are:
• Workers society
• Free food
• Medical test
• Pensions
• Social security card
• EOBI
FOOD
• The workers are offer food free of cost
• FSL gives 3 meals to every worker so they can
perform more with full energy
• Not only this the officers and engineers are
also given food and centrally conditioned
cabins
MEDICAL TESTS
• The worker performing close to the furnace
have a chance of inhaling gases emitting from
the furnace as all the gases cannot be cleared
by the pollution control plant.
• So the workers have a regular medical
checkup after a period for respiratory diseases
and if an issue is found the treatment is also
for free.
PENSIONS AND SECURITY CARD
• The workers are given a social security card to
report their earnings and get an accurate
amount of pension.
• The WWF has been giving pensions to these
workers so that they can survive this inflation
after retirement.
EOBI

• FSL has signed up each worker in EOBI

• EOBI ensures that the children of these
workers get a good education.
• The EOBI will not only educate their children
but they will educate them in any school of
the worker’s preference for free.
