ISO
(International Organization for Standardization)

Because 'International Organization for

Standardization' would have different acronyms in
different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for
Organisation internationale de normalisation),
founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISO is
derived from the Greek ‘ISOS', meaning equal.
Whatever the country, whatever the language, we are
always ISO.
About ISO
• ISO is an independent, non-governmental international
organization with a membership of 165 national standard body.
• ISO was founded on 23rd February 1947 and is headquartered in
Geneva, Switzerland
• The three official languages of the ISO are English, French, and
Russian.
• ISO Each member represents ISO in its country.
• India is also a ISO member. Our national standard body is BIS
(Bureau of Indian Standards) for example- United states- ANSI
(American National Standards Institute ), United Kingdom-
British Standards Institution  , Japan- Japanese Industrial
Standards Committee
• Today ISO 23305 International standards covering almost all
aspects of technology and manufacturing.
What ISO DO?
• Through ISO members (the national standards
bodies in 165 different countries) ISO bring
together experts from all over the world to
develop International Standards.
STANDARDS

• Formula that describes the best way of doing something.

• Everything that you use or wear or carry is made in a factory or workshop in a step by
step, specific and standardized way. All the workers perform actions on an item in a
certain predetermined way and sequence. This is called Standardization which delivers
products or services of consistent quality to you.
• Making a product, managing a process, delivering a service or supplying materials – ISO
standards cover a huge range of activities.
• For instance,
• Quality management standards  (ISO 9001 )to help work more efficiently and reduce
product failures.
• Environmental management standards (ISO14001) to help reduce environmental impacts,
reduce waste and be more sustainable.
• Health and safety standards  (ISO 45001)to help reduce accidents in the workplace.
• Energy management standards (ISO5001)to help cut energy consumption.
• Food safety standards (ISO 22000 )to help prevent food from being contaminated.
• IT security standards (ISO/IEC 27001)to help keep sensitive information secure.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

To improve the quality of products and

services and consistently meet their
customers’ expectations, ISO has some of
best-known standards, The ISO 9000
family.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (QMS)
• Quality- Refers to all those features of a product (or service)
which are required by the customer.

• Quality management system refers to the organization's

structure for managing its process or activities that transform
input of resources into a product or services which means the
organization objectives such as satisfying the customer`s
quality requirements, complying to regulations, or meeting
environmental objectives.

The QMS in Maruti is documented as follows : Quality Policy &

Objectives, Quality Manual, Processes and Procedures,
Standards like MOS, WIS and Various check sheets and records
History
• ISO 9000 this series was first published in 1987 and was
revised in 1994, 2000, 2008 and 2015.
• In today’s fast changing scenario, with the purpose of
aligning Quality and Quality standards with market
conditions, ISO revises the standards in every 5 years.
• Till its 2nd revision, which happened in 2000, ISO 9001
had three parts: ISO 9001, ISO 9002 & ISO 9003
• In the 2nd revision, all three standards are combined
and ISO 9001:2000 was formed.
• However, the current revision of ISO is known as ISO
9001:2015
QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM PRINCIPLES
• ISO 9001:2015 defines 7 Quality Management Principles (QMPs) as the
basis of the standard-
1. CUSTOMER FOCUS- Meet and exceed customer expectation
2. LEADERSHIP- Provide purpose , direction and engagement
3. ENGAGEMENT OF PEOPLE- Recognition, empowerment and
enhancements of skill and knowledge
4. PROCESS APPROACH- Understand process to optimize performance
5. Improvement- To maintain current performance and to create new
opportunities
6. Evidence based decision making- Facts evidence and data analysis for
decision making.
7. RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT- Manage relationship with interested
parties to optimize performance.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
For companies and organizations of any type
that require practical tools to manage their
environmental responsibilities, there’s the
ISO 14000 family.
ENVIRONMENT ?
ENVIRONMENT POLLUTION
• the contamination of the physical and biological
components of the earth/atmosphere system to such
an extent that normal environmental processes are
adversely affected."

• Air pollution
• Water pollution
• Noise pollution
• Thermal pollution
• Land pollution
Air pollutants- carbon monoxide,
lead, nitrogen oxides, ground-level
ozone, particle pollution (often referred to
as particulate matter), and sulfur oxides.
Water pollutants- pathogens, inorganic
compounds, organic material and macroscopic
pollutants.
NOISE POLLUTION
THERMAL POLLUTION are nuclear power and electric power
plants, crude oil refineries, steel melting factories, coal fire
power plant, boiler from industries which release large amount
of heat
Soil or land pollution-It is typically caused by industrial activity, agricultural
chemicals or improper disposal of waste.
Environmental global issues
Ozone layer depletion
What we can do
1. Use resources wisely- do not waste , save energy, save fuel,
save paper.
2. Conserve water- never waste water, re-use where possible,
don’t dump hazardous chemicals into water, harvest rain
water.
3. Not to a plastic bags yes to cloth bags- plastic do not
degrade easily, they clog drain, threat to animal, release
toxic substance on burning
4. Save trees plant trees- a tree not only provide beauty, shade
,shelter and food but also act as lifetime sink to co2
5. 3R- Recycle, Reuse, Reduce
6. Fix the leaks- leaks are energy losses,
compressed air , steam and water leaks- identify
and arrest them regularly
7. Switch of when not around-switch of fan and
light, do not keep TV's , computer, stand by
mode
8. Be energy efficient- say yes to CFL/LED light,
pressure cook, use solar device, enjoy natural
light and ventilation, buy energy efficient
product check star rating. Avoid idle running of
machine,
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

• An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a

set of processes and practices that enable an
organization to reduce its environmental impacts
and increase its operating efficiency.
ISO 14001
• ISO 14001 is the international standard that specifies
requirements for an effective environmental management
system (EMS).
• ISO14001 standards were first published in 1996 and revised
in 2004 and 2015.
• The revised standards are known as ISO 14001:2015
• MSIL was first certified for establishing and maintaining EMS
as per ISO 14001:1996 standards in 1999. Recertified in 2002
with same EMS and then in 2005 & 2008 with ISO14001:2004
