PROBLEM
A Shaft 100mm in diameter that rotates at 30 Hz is subjected to bending loads that
produce a maximum bending moment of 2500π N.m. Determine the torque that can
also act simultaneously on the shaft without exceeding a shearing stress of 80 Mpa
or normal stress of 100 Mpa. What is the maximum power that can be transmitted by
shaft?
TRANSFORMATION OF
STRAINS
Conversion of stresses is an applicable method
Stress is a mathematical representation
Could not be recorded experimentally
Sign Conventions
Extensional Strains : +ve
Increase in angle – Shear strain is +ve

PROBLEM
Further to Previous Problem, if E = 200 Gpa and ν = 0.30 then Calculate following.
A. Principal stresses
B. Stresses for plane at 60 Degree from x-axis
STRAIN ROSSETS
In real life, stresses could not be determined accurately
Its also not sure as what would be the plane of principal strains
Maximum and Minimum Values
