Introduction :-

A rectifier is an electrical device that converts the alternating

current (AC) , which periodically reverses direction, into the direct
current (DC) , which flows only in the one direction . This process is
knows as Rectification .
There are two types of rectifier circuit
can be used :

1) Half wave rectifier

2) Full wave rectifier

Half wave rectifier

The process of removing one-half of the input single to

establish a dc level is called “half-wave rectification”.

In Half wave rectification , the rectifier conducts current

positive half cycle of input ac single only.

Negative half cycle is suppressed.

*Components that requires to make an half-
wave rectifier as-

-Step-down Transformers:-

The step-down transformer reduces the AC voltage from high to low . In half wave
rectifier, we generally use a step-down transformer because the voltage needed for
the diode is very small. Applying a large AC voltage without using transformer will
permanently destroy the diode. So we use step-down transformer in half wave
rectifier.
In the step-down transformer, the primary winding has more turns than the secondary
winding. So the step-down transformer reduces the voltage from primary winding to
secondary winding.
-Diode:-
A diode is a two terminal device that allows electric
current in one direction and blocks electric current in
another direction.

- Resistor:-

A resistor is an electronic component that restricts the

current flow to a certain level.
-LED:-
ight-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light
source that emits light when current flows through it.

-Wire:-
Wires are pieces of metal that transport electricity.
They are usually flexible which makes them easier to
use.
operation

AC voltage across secondary terminals AB changes its

polarity after each half cycle.

During negative half cycle terminal A is negative so diode is

reversed biased and conducts no current.

So , current flows through diode during positive half cycle only.

In this way current flows through load RL in one direction only.

Output frequency of Half wave rectifier

Output frequency of HWR is

equal to input frequency.

This means when input ac

completes one cycle , rectified
wave also completes one cycle.
f out = fIn
Advantages & Disadvantages
Advantages:
-
*Half wave rectifier is a simple circuit.

*It has a low cost.

*We can easy to use it.

*We can easily construct.

*It has a low number of component, therefore it is

cheap.
Disadvantages:-

*The transformer utilization factor is low.

*They produce a low output voltage.

*DC saturation of transformer core resulting in

magnetizing current and also some hysteresis
losses and generation of harmonics.

*The power output and therefore rectification

efficiency are quite low.
